Headed down to the borders on saturday to take up our annual invite to play capoeira at Traquair Fair.
It’s the best deal ever really: In return for playing capoeira for an hour we get free entry and camping which of course leads to drinking much Traquair House Ale and dancing foolishly while slurring in bad portuguese late into the night.
Sounds debaucherous but its actually not too bad.
The Fair is a family style affair so there's various stages around the grounds and the main music stage is set up in the extremely calming orchard. There's something vallium-esque about tiny apples.. So, plenty of drinking but not of the fighty-shouty kind just amusing teenagers full of fruit wine.
The theme this year was Latin America (in all its glory) so there was Brazillian acrobats, and Australian who got swallowed by a giant balloon (go figure...) some phat samba beats and some very stylish Latin Jazz which was grand. Then the artifice of class disappeared and mad in-house brewery band played AC/DC covers and there was much air guitar, pole dancing and more beer. After the bands had stopped we ended up partying until not very late at all in one of the bands gear trucks. Very amusing. I've never played percussion with a pop gun before, or been handed ouzo by a 11 year old.
Next morning was a bit interesting...
Thank goodness I have my new camping stove and coffee appliances.
The sun of Saturday had disappeared entirely but miraculously the rain held off for an hour for us to have another demo game after which we and our hangovers skedaddled.
So, that was my weekend.
It was nice to have a dance and be out of town for a weekend without big responsibilities, but more importantly I got to hang out with lovely Capoeiristas and drink very good rhubarb wine. And play samba de roda in a horsebox with a guy with a small red trumpet. Yes.
(Thats me with my foot in the air by the way)
