Sometimes I think I could be perfectly happy singing only "They can't take that away from me" in the voice of Billie Holiday. It's only in the morning, when my throat is filled with phlegm and my voice is not properly warmed up, that I can really hit those low notes and imitate the simple, plaintive, TRUE style of Billie. As a musician, as a performer, a portrayer of life, a voice for feelings too deep to be confronted on a daily basis, she ran circles around everyone. And I adore her for it.
"the way you hold your knife
the way we danced till three
the way you changed my life
no, no, they can't take that away from me"
