Believe me, I am not too proud of being a citizen of a country where

-The vicepresident has declared war on the Geneva convention, 'cos torture is a-okay when we do it to dirty Arabs (vice versa is barbaric and evil, of course).

-There is a fucking DEBATE over whether a parapelegic prisoner has the RIGHT to NOT sit in his own waste for days at a time because the prison doesn't want to install bars so he can move to the toilet or his bed from his wheelchair. Apparently handlebars would be a SECURITY RISK, and it's "not so bad" compared to prison life in general!

-At the same time, a large chunk of the country is convinced that prisoners have easier and better lives than they do.

-And we drop depleted uranium (half life of several million years, iirc) on Iraqis to liberate them (cancer is SO liberating) and, as you point out, melt children's skin. But we're LIBERATING them for DEMOCRACY, so it's okay! Why can't they be grateful?!

Yeah. I try not to be cynical, but it's hard. On the bright side, now that this stuff is coming out, people actually seem to be waking up and getting mad.

I haven't been happy about any of that either (although I didn't know about the paraplegic prisoner or the depleted uranium), including the gung-ho rush into Iraq in the first place instead of going through the usual UN channels.
