Hi all,
I have a 2004 VW Jetta, which just failed the inspection, apparently because of readiness codes. There are a couple of recurring problems that cause the check engine light to come on. I have a gadget (ScanGauge II) that allows me to check and reset OBD II trouble codes.
The codes that come up often are P0544 and P0546, which indicate problems with the exhaust gas temperature sensor circuit. I think it's a bad connection and in any case I'm too concerned about it, so I just keep resetting the codes, although it's pretty annoying. A couple of months ago another code came up a couple of times, it was P2181, cooling system malfunction. That got me worried and I kept a close eye on the temperature gauge and diagnostics and everything seemed fine, so I reset it. I assume it was a bad connection.
Now the guy who did the inspection asked me right away whether I reset any codes, and explained that after resetting OBD II codes I have to go through a drive cycle that's specific to the vehicle. He also gave me a report, which listed a few things as "not ready" in the Non-Continuos Monitors section:
Catalyst
Secondary Air System
Oxygen Sensor
Can all three of these be related to the two codes that I keep resetting?
I should probably do something about the recurring codes, anyway. Replace the EGT sensor, for example, and maybe the wiring. I read somewhere on the net that the sensor can be replaced with a 2.2 k resistor -- can anyone comment on it? I mean, other than telling me that the resistor won't actually work as a sensor.
Can someone please explain how often the OBD system scans the sensors (non-continuous monitoring)? I've been wondering about that for a while.
Is it possible to reset the readiness codes (not the "regular" codes, which I am able to reset). If so, who could do that? My gadget doesn't seem to have a command for that, but it does have programmable commands -- it it possible to do it that way?
Thank you very much.
