I've had my 2005.5 Jetta for about 4 years now, and not had too many major problems, but now I'm having a problem, and it seems to be sort of major.

Over the winter (I live in Vermont, but the winter was actually remarkably mild) my car started starting a little more harshly. It took longer for the engine to turn on, and it was slightly noisier than usual. I wrote these off as "normal", which, they are as far as I know.

So a few weeks ago, the car was still starting pretty hard, actually more so than even the coldest winter days. I was taking it in for a check engine light, so I was going to have them check why it was starting hard, but they ran into some unexpected problems which prohibited me from having enough time to have them check why it was starting hard. I figured that it wasn't *so* bad so I'd have them check it next time.

I had to drive to PA the week after and made the 8 hour trip there , and back just fine. During that time, I got my ignition coil recall notice, and scheduled my appointment on the Friday of that week. I got back Saturday, and my car sat until it was time to go in for the ignition coils on Friday. That was the point where I got into my car, turned the key on, and it wouldn't start, even after holding the key on for 10 seconds. The engine was cranking, it just didn't actually start. So I tried again, and it DID start.

The guy over at VW told me it was because of the ignition coils, they probably needed to be replaced--so replace them they did. And of course, during their "complimentary 21 point inspection" found that my CV-joint boot was torn, so I shelled out the $250 to replace that. I picked up my car at 5 (they finished at noon), and it kept cranking but started after about 8 seconds. This is UNUSUAL for my car, which up until that day, started every day after just a second or two. I went in to complain to the dealer, and they told me this is "normal".

Now, if my car sits for longer than an hour or two, it won't start for about 10-15 seconds. VW is telling me this is "normal". After it starts, it idles really strange. There's a pretty big but slow shudder.

I called my family's mechanic back home, and he said it's possible VW botched the ignition coil job, or that maybe I have a fuel line problem. I can't take it to him because he's in PA, so I'm taking it to another mechanic on Friday, but they're very inexperienced when it comes to working on these cars. I was wondering what else it could be so that I could help them out a bit. They've got my car for the entire day, but obviously I don't want them to tear the entire car apart, it will cost entirely too much money!

My boyfriend is pretty handy with cars and said he didn't think it's the fuel pump because after it runs for a while the idle is normal.

If it helps I have the 2.5 L with tiptronic. It's a 2005.5 new jetta with about 57K miles and has been maintained very well.
