Howard Zinn, a people's history of empire. (1922-2010)
“If history is to be creative, to anticipate a possible future without denying the past, it should, I believe, emphasize new possibilities by disclosing those hidden episodes of the past when, even if in brief flashes, people showed their ability to resist, to join together, occasionally to win. I am supposing, or perhaps only hoping, that our future may be found in the past’s fugitive movements of compassion rather than in its solid centuries of warfare.”
Howard Zinn , best known for " A people's history of the United States" also created a graphic novel about America in the 20th century as it expanded into the world as a great power called "A people's history of Empire" It cover expansions into Cuba, the Philippines, Haiti, Japan, etc. The reason for this project can best be summed up in this one panel.
A more realistic history than the average person is taught in middle school. What follows is the story of the Ludlow massacre in 1913 ( a bitter strike against the Colorado fuel and iron company). Zinn shows this to be the first time the US tried using the same tactics and military action it used in other countries here in Colorado against it's own citizens.
I like PhoUS but i do think it is a little dry , this project is more aimed at kids and a great source to get people thinking about America it's place in the world and how it got there.
