Chapter VI
HanKyung stared out the window of the classroom, idly twirling his pen back and forth and around with his fingers, tapping the end against his notebook every now and then. He appeared to be lost in thought.
“What’s up with HanKyung?” ShiWon turned to ShinDong. The older boy just shook his head and shrugged, expression as clueless as he was.
“He had a lovers’ spat with DongHae,” Ayumi explained. The two boys nearly keeled over in shock at the girl’s sudden appearance. She giggled. “Sorry, my bad. But yeah, I think DongHae got jealous of the girl HanKyung-oppa was talking with.”
“Oh, you must mean Stephanie-nuna,” said ShiWon.
“Why would DongHae be jealous of her?” asked ShinDong. Ayumi looked at him with an, ‘Are you serious?’ expression. ShiWon, however, seemed to understand after a moment, his eyes widening and lighting up.
“OH MY GOSH!”
Everyone in the class (including the teacher) and HanKyung who had been snapped out of his reverie by the exclamation, turned to look at ShiWon. The younger boy immediately clamped a hand over his mouth.
“Jeongsahamnida,” he quickly apologized. He turned to look around. ShinDong and Ayumi had already both returned to their own work, as if they were never a part of his conversation. Ayumi, however, was silently giggling behind her hand.
“What was that?” HanKyung whispered to ShiWon once the teacher had turned around. ShiWon just shook his head.
“Nothing.”

“DongHae . . . you’re in love.”
BoA’s words kept playing over and over in DongHae’s mind. It was ridiculous. HanKyung was his best friend, he could not really be in love with him. Could he? No, best friends do not fall in love with each other. It was true that he really liked the older boy and enjoyed being with him, but that was just simple friendship and admiration, was it not? But lately - no, more like these recent years - whenever he was around the older boy, he got especially happy. He got this warm feeling in his chest and a weird fluttering sensation in his stomach. Did that really mean he was in love?
“Great going,” SungMi said to BoA dryly, seeing that their friend was again lost in thought, this time with an unreadable expression.
“I only wanted to help him,” BoA pouted. “I didn’t know it would hurtle him into a state of catatonia.”
SungMi sighed and shook her head.
“What did you say to DongHae to make him like this?” JunSu leaned over and asked.
“Not me,” said SungMi, holding up her hands as a sign of innocence. “Her. She told DongHae that he was in love.”
“DongHae’s in love?” EunHyuk suddenly joined in on the conversation. BoA and SungMi turned to look at him with an expression that read, ‘Are you stupid?’.
“No, seriously, DongHae’s in love?” JunSu asked. “With who?”
The two girls turned to him and gave him the same look.
“Yeah, they really are that stupid,” a new voice entered the conversation. They all looked up to see ChangMin (literally) towering over them. “Seriously, it’s been pretty obvious since at least the beginning of the year. You guys are just too stupid or too blind to see it.”
“Well, that’s a little harsh,” KiBum quickly defended the older boys. “If you think about it, it isn’t that obvious. DongHae and HanKyung-hyung always have been very close, so it can be a little hard to tell sometimes.”
JunSu flashed his brother a triumphant, vindicated smile.
“Wait, DongHae s in love with HanKyung-hyung?” he suddenly asked. BoA and SungMi both facepalmed, while KiBum just shook his head.
“Seriously, you should have noticed it by now,” ChangMin rolled his eyes.
“He’s probably been too caught up in his own love story to notice anything,” EunHyuk smirked. JunSu smacked him upside the head. “OW!”
“Well, it’s a pretty huge piece of information to absorb and accept,” said SungMin, finally joining in the conversation after unsuccessfully trying to ease DongHae out of his trance. “It’s pretty much a given DongHae’s going to be confused about it all.”
“I think the only thing to do is to let him slowly figure it out himself,” SungMi sighed. The friends were all silent.
“I actually bet you DongHae-hyung will be the first to figure it out,” ChangMin suddenly grinned wickedly.
“No way! HanKyung-oppa isn’t as dense and oblivious,” SungMi challenged.
“I beg to differ when it comes to this,” said KiBum.
“1000 won on DongHae,” ChangMin offered.
“Fine. 1000 won on HanKyung-oppa,” said SungMi.
“You do know this bet’s not really going to work out if neither of them make a move though, right?” asked KiBum. “1000 won that neither of them have the guts to tell the other.”
“1000 won it’ll be that Stephanie-nuna who makes them both realize they want each other,” JunSu added.
“Count me out,” said SungMin.
“I can’t in good conscience join in on this, so I’m out too,” said BoA.
“I’m actually gonna be the ref,” EunHyuk decided. “Keep tabs on all of you.”
“In that case, why don’t all three of you be refs then?” KiBum suggested. He turned to the others. “Agreed?”
“Agreed.”

“DongHae’s in love with HanKyung,” ShiWon blurted to the others at lunch. Luckily, DongHae and HanKyung were both missing at the moment (and so was ShinDong, but ShiWon was not really paying attention to that at the moment).
“Yeah, I knew that already,” said JunSu.
“Oh, really?” asked ShiWon, looking a little sheepish.
“You really are slow,” JunSu shook his head.
“You’re one to talk,” ChangMin scoffed. “Don’t worry ShiWon-hyung, they’re actually all as slow as you are. Anyways, the question now isn’t whether or not DongHae likes HanKyung-hyung, because that is already blatantly obvious, but whether or not HanKyung-hyung likes DongHae back.”
“I think he does,” said ShiWon.
“In a more than friends way?” asked EunHyuk.
“Well, I’m still pretty sure he does,” ShiWon nodded. “I just don’t think he quite knows yet.”
“So then what are we going to do?” KiBum questioned. HeeChul opened his mouth to say something, but KiBum quickly cut him off. “And no, we’re not going with whatever you’re going to suggest, because it’s going to end up in ridiculous fail.”
“Hey! My ideas are brilliant and are not fail!” HeeChul protested.
“Does running around town in a schoolgirl outfit ring any bells?” KiBum raised an eyebrow. HeeChul pouted, but shut up.
“You ran around town in a schoolgirl outfit?” YooChun tried not to laugh. JunSu and ChangMin quickly clamped a hand each over their older brother’s mouth.
“Yeah, you don’t want to go there,” KiBum said sagely.
“Look, guys, to be honest, it isn’t really our business,” SungMin cut in. “This is between DongHae and HanKyung-hyung, and we shouldn’t meddle. If it’s meant to be, then it’ll happen, if it’s not, no matter what we do, nothing’s going to happen.”
“You suck,” JunSu pouted.
“Look, I really want them to be together and all, but it’s really up to them. We can’t just disregard their true feelings, or them in general and just go along with what we think should be. I mean, think about it, are we truly thinking with them in mind? Besides, as one of the refs for your ridiculous bet, I think I should be the one to tell you and any meddling will count in a disqualification, because it may give unfair advantage to certain parties.”
“You guys made a bet out of this?” asked YooChun. EunHyuk, JunSu, KiBum, and SungMin pointed to ChangMin who just grinned. YooChun shook his head. “Figures.”
“Regardless, SungMin’s right, as much as we may like for them to be together, it wouldn’t be good to disregard HanKyung and DongHae and their own roles in figuring out their own feelings,” said HeeChul.
“Wow. I think the world’s coming to an end. Hyung’s turning smart,” ChangMin mused, “not to mention, sappy.”
Needless to say, HeeChul smacked him upside the head.

“The senior teams and junior teams are separate, along with the boys and girls of course,” HanKyung told DongHae at the volleyball tryouts. “YooChun-hyung’s going to be trying out for the senior team. Anyways, Go-seongsaengnim and Song-seongsaengnim are the coaches for this year’s junior boys.”
DongHae nodded. Two teachers walked into the gym.
“Alright,” Song-seongsaeng barked out. “I’m going to call out four names. Heo YoungSaeng. Choi SeungHyun. Kim HanKyung. Kim KyuJong.”
The four boys stepped forward. Song-seongsaeng smiled.
“Congratulations. Based on your performance last year, you’re on the team again this year.”
The four boys all sighed in relief.
“Thank you Song-seongsaeng, Go-seongsaeng,” they bowed. HanKyung looked at DongHae and flashed him a thumbs up sign. The younger boy smiled back, albeit a little nervously.
“The rest of you,” Song-seongsaeng continued. “Let’s see what you’ve got!”
While HanKyung and the other three were already taken aside to go through drills with Go-seongsaeng, the other boys began to display their proficiency. HanKyung snuck a glance to see DongHae make a rather powerful overhand serve. The ball sailed smoothly over the net.
“Yes!” HanKyung silently cheered.
“Oi, Loverboy, swoon later,” SeungHyun smirked. HanKyung playfully shoved him aside and returned his attention to the drills. Meanwhile, DongHae was doing pretty good, serving with little difficulty and setting/volleying the ball with ease. However, when it came to doing spikes, he had to admit he was a little nervous. Song-seongsaeng blew the whistle, signalling for DongHae to move. The teacher set the ball. DongHae jumped and spiked it. He cringed right after, knowing despite it landing with a smack, it did not carry enough power or speed.
“Could use a little work, but not bad,” Song-seongsaeng mused. “Lee DongHae, right?”
DongHae just nodded wordlessly.
“Next!” Song-seongsaeng continued. After going through all the students, Song-seongsaeng began splitting them up into groups of six.
“You’re now going to be playing a few rounds to see how each of you respond in the actual team,” Go-seongsaeng instructed. “Let’s go.”
DongHae got into his group, a boy by the name of Kim HyunJoong began directing everyone to their respective posts. DongHae was given the privilege of first serve. Just as he was about to lift the ball, a shout was heard.
“Heads up!”
DongHae turned to see a volleyball flying his way.
“DongHae, watch out!” HanKyung shouted before tackling the younger boy to the ground, the ball colliding with his back as he did.
“HanKyung!” several of the sophomores called out.
“Oh my gosh! HanKyung-sunbae, I am so sorry!” a freshman began sputtering.
“Are you okay?” HanKyung asked DongHae, concern in his eyes and worry in his voice. DongHae was stunned for a moment, shocked more by the proximity of the older boy than by the fact that he could have been injured. He could feel his heartbeat racing and his cheeks flushing. But he was always close with the older boy. What could be different now? Was he really in love?
“I’m okay!” DongHae quickly replied, pushing the older boy away. He felt a twinge of guilt when he saw the hurt expression on HanKyung’s face.
“You alright?” Go-seongsaeng came over and asked. DongHae nodded. “HanKyung, how’s your back?”
“It was nothing Coach,” HanKyung assured him, getting up from the ground and helping up DongHae.
“Okay, then let’s get back to these games!”
* * * * *
“I’m sorry for what happened earlier,” DongHae said softly as they left the school together.
“Hmm? Oh, that’s no big deal. I figured you were probably feeling a little awkward and embarrassed,” HanKyung smiled. He pulled the younger boy in a sideways hug to show that there was no harm done. “Don’t worry. I probably would have done the same.”
DongHae slowly smiled.
“HanKyung?”
“Yeah?”
I think I might be falling in like with you.
“It’s nothing.”
A/N: i remember watching an episode of some TV show, and a female character said to a male character, "i'm in like with you". so that's where it came from if you think DongHae's thought was a little weird sounding.
