Chapter VIII
“You have to lift your fingers higher, YounHa,” RyeoWook gently reminded his younger sister as he helped her practice a piece she was going to perform at a recital. “Take note of the title, 'A Light Dance'. The tone is supposed to be vivid, but that doesn't mean it needs to be choppy. Good! Alright, a little softer here. Now crescendo. Excellent!”
“Honeys! I'm home!” a voice called out.
“Did you just address my nieces and nephews as your 'Honeys'?” another voice inquired.
“Rosy-oppa!” YounHa happily squealed and abandoned the piano, dashing out to greet her uncle's friend.
“How's my favourite girl in the world?” Rose scooped up the little girl in his arms.
“Where's my welcome?” JongWoon pouted.
“She loves me more,” Rose grinned smugly.
“Uncle JongWoon!” the others ran out to greet them.
“That's more like it,” JongWoon smiled.
“Oh good,” YoungWoon poked his head out of the kitchen. “You're just in time for dinner. Alright kids, wash up for dinner.”
“What are we having?” JongWoon asked.
“Curry,” YoungWoon replied.
“Sweet!” Rose cheered, setting YounHa down on the ground and going into the kitchen.
“No swiping!” YoungWoon growled. The younger man immediately shrank back and pouted.
“Caught before the crime could even be committed,” JongWoon chuckled, wrapping his arms around his best friend's waist to pull him away. “Nice job, Detective.”
“I'm not an SI for nothing,” YoungWoon smirked. “Get seated. We'll be eating soon.”
“Need any help?” JongWoon offered.
“Well, not for cooking, since that's pretty much done, but could you take the rice out?”
“Got it,” JongWoon nodded. He took the rice into the dining room, where all the children, JungSu, and Rose were already nicely seated. “Well, don't we look picture perfect?”
“Wait, where are Hannie and Hae?” Rose questioned.
“It's JunKi and Aoi's wedding anniversary, and DongHae wanted to make dinner for them, so he got HanKyung to help him,” JungSu explained.
“Ah,” Rose nodded. “How are things progressing between them?”
“What do you mean?” JungSu asked.
“Oh, y'know,” the younger man drawled. “Their relationship. Have they taken it to the next step yet?”
“I honestly have no idea what you're talking about,” JungSu eyed him weirdly.
“Really?” Rose deadpanned. “No one else sees it?”
“Oh, not to worry,” HeeChul cut in. “We know what you're talking about. Well, at least KiBum, SungMin, and I. ShinDong, not so sure.”
“I know what you're talking about,” ShinDong assured the older boy. “I think.”
“Okay, so yeah, we know what you're referring to, and no, no next step,” HeeChul continued. “I'm pretty sure DongHae's trying to figure himself out, but Hannie's still pretty clueless.”
“Ayumi's been dropping him hints though,” said ShinDong.
“And I'm pretty sure the twins have been doing the same thing,” SungMin added. “But . . . you can't force these things.”
“It's only a matter of time,” KiBum smiled.
“But it's already been forever!” Rose whined. “Why can't they move along faster! I wanna be able to gush about how cute they are and tease them to no end!”
“Don't you already do all that?” JongWoon rolled his eyes. “Besides, they're still young and they have time.”
“What is Rosy-oppa talking about?” YounHa whispered to YeonHee, completely confused and left out of the conversation. YeonHee turned to KyuHyun, since she had no idea what they were talking about either.
“Something crazy!” KyuHyun whispered in an exaggerated manner, since it was Rose they were talking about.
“I'm not crazy!” Rose protested.
“You keep telling yourself that,” JongWoon chuckled.

“Argh! This is hopeless!” DongHae threw his hands up in exasperation. HanKyung couldn't help but laugh, the sound warm and sweet. DongHae felt himself blush because of it.
“I told you, you should have just used regular mayonnaise rather than try to make your own,” the older boy chuckled.
“But then it wouldn't be as special!” DongHae protested.
“Here,” HanKyung said as he put his hands on DongHae's, “let's do this together.”
DongHae froze as soon as HanKyung's skin touched his. He felt his pulse quicken and his heart thump intensely in his chest. It suddenly felt too hot and stuffy, and HanKyung's hands seemed to burn his, but he didn't want the older boy to let go, but his mind and body were going haywire, and -
“On second thought, you're right,” he quickly slipped from HanKyung's grasp. He didn't notice the frown marring the older boy's delicate features. “We should just use regular mayonnaise. We don't have much time left.”
As much as he loved JunKi and Aoi, and wanted their special day to be special, screw it all if his body and emotions didn't want to work properly!
“Okay,” HanKyung sighed, putting the bowl of failed homemade mayonnaise to the side. “I'll get started on the salad instead.”
DongHae did not fail to catch the slightly hurt tone in the older boy's voice. He bit the corner of his lower lip guiltily, wondering if he should have done things a little differently. Was he really falling for HanKyung like SungMi and BoA said?
“Yoohoo?!” HanKyung's hand suddenly flashed before his eyes. The older boy was waving his hand in front of DongHae's face.
“I'm sorry, what?” the younger boy blinked.
“You spaced out on me,” HanKyung chuckled. “I just wanted to ask if you thought this was enough prosciutto.”
DongHae nodded, not even bothering to look in the bowl.
“There can never be too much prosciutto,” he replied. HanKyung smiled, then turned away to work on the pasta. DongHae sighed, then quickly finished whipping up the dressing and mixed it with the salad. He divided the salad into two bowls, garnished them, then brought them out into the dining room for JunKi and Aoi.
“Wow,” JunKi smiled as DongHae put a plate down in front of him. “Looks good.”
“Warm potato salad with prosciutto, drizzled with truffle oil and garnished with arugula and rosemary,” DongHae announced, placing the other plate before Aoi. “Signor, Signora, buon appetite!”
“Thank you!” JunKi and Aoi both laughed before tucking into the food. DongHae smiled to himself and went back into the kitchen.
“Oh good,” said HanKyung. “Could you pass me the parsley, salt, and pepper? The clams are almost done. Then it'll just be adding the linguine, and you can bring it out to them.”
DongHae handed HanKyung the small bowl of parsley, and then handed him the salt and the pepper. HanKyung tossed the parsley in with the clams, then sprinkled a little salt and pepper to the pan. DongHae then drained the pasta and gave it to HanKyung who dumped it into the pan and tossed it. When he finished, he carefully used tongs to pick up the pasta and put it onto the dishes. Taking some of the leftover parsley, he sprinkled it over the dishes as garnish.
“Okay, take this one, and I'll take this one,” HanKyung gave one of the plates to DongHae. The two went out into the dining room and placed the dishes before JunKi and Aoi.
“Linguine alle vongole,” Aoi grinned. “You boys are amazing!”
“Just wait 'til you taste it,” HanKyung chuckled, taking away the empty salad bowl. “Hope you enjoy.”
The two boys left the couple alone and went back into the kitchen.
“What would you like to eat?” HanKyung asked DongHae.
“Just ramyun's fine,” the younger boy replied. HanKyung nodded and sifted through a cupboard to take out two packages of instant ramyun.
“Do you want any vegetables or meat with that?” HanKyung inquired. DongHae shook his head.
“Do you think they like this?” he asked, pursing his lips in thought.
“This?” HanKyung asked back, motioning to the whole set up they had in the kitchen.
“Like, do you think it's better than them going to a three-star restaurant?” DongHae questioned. HanKyung smiled softly at the younger boy and pulled him into a hug. DongHae stiffened for moment, but then relaxed and just let himself enjoy the embrace.
“I think it's more meaningful,” HanKyung told him. “I mean, we might not be able to beat a three-star restaurant in terms of quality and all that, but I'm sure JunKi and Aoi appreciate everything we're doing for them. They love you. They'll like anything you do for them.”
“Thanks,” DongHae mumbled.
“WHEEEEEEE!” a loud whistle broke their little moment.
“That would be the water,” HanKyung stated, quickly turning to tend the stove. “Sit down and rest. The ramyun will be done in few minutes.”
“Don't bother with bowls,” DongHae told him. “Let's just eat it from the pot.”
“Alright,” he answered. When the ramyun was finished, HanKyung moved the pot onto the large granite island where DongHae had already placed a coaster down along with two pairs of chopsticks. Taking his chopsticks, HanKyung took some noodles and gently blew on them, then brought them to DongHae's lips. DongHae stared at the older boy for a moment, then relented upon seeing HanKyung's gentle smiled and ate the noodles. He could feel the heat creeping along his cheeks and silently willed it away.
After feeding DongHae the first bite, HanKyung took a bite of noodles himself. The two friends slurped silently with HanKyung reading a recipe for chicken tagliatelle and DongHae sneaking glances at the older boy. Say SungMi and BoA were right, and he was in love with HanKyung. So what? It did not mean anything if the older boy did not feel the same way. Yet, what if HanKyung did feel the same way? Or what if HanKyung had thought about and considered whether or not there was something more than just friendship between them?
DongHae was jerked from his thoughts when he felt a noodle that was taut as if being pulled. He looked up and saw that one of the noodles in his mouth was connected to HanKyung's mouth. They were both biting on the same noodle. HanKyung seemed to have noticed it too as his brows furrowed in confusion and then raised when he saw what was happening. Their eyes met.
