Dr. Ronald Reed Cowden, the Count Von Eigen, a native of Monroe, Louisiana and a resident of Mobile died at a local hospital on March 17, 2006. He is survived by his wife, Ann Tiffin Greer Cowden, and her daughter Vidmer Greer Flynn ( P. Robbins) and grandchildren, Vidmer Tiffin Greer, William Sanford Greer III and Mac Barton Greer II.
Dr. Cowden, a renowned biomedical educator , graduated from Louisiana State University and received his PhD from University of Vienna in Austria in Biology and Anthropology. He completed his postdoctoral fellowship at Oak Ridge in Tennessee. He spent his career pursuing his passion as an academician in biological and medical sciences researching and teaching at colleges and universities throughout the United States including Johns Hopkins University, University of Florida and Louisiana State University. Dr. Cowden served as a Professor and as Department Chairman at the University of Denver and Albany Medical College. He was instrumental in the founding of Quillen-Dischner School of Medicine at East Tennessee University, where he served as a dean and as a Chairman of the Department of Biophysics. Dr. Cowden served as a Trustee of the Bermuda Biological Station in St. Georges, Bermuda.
Dr. Cowden was a prolific scientific author contributing over 120 articles to professional journals throughout the world. He served on the editorial boards of 11 scientific journals including the Histochemistry Journals of London and Berlin. Dr. Cowden was recognized in Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare and as a fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society. He made significant contributions to biological science through his research activities in cell biology and the study of invertebrate animals. His application of flourescent dye techniques in microscopy was ground breaking. Above all else, Dr. Cowden was a devoted mentor of young scientists and took great pride in his role in the development of their careers.
Dr. Cowden served his country as a member of Special Operations for the Central Intelligence Agency in the mid 1950's.
The family will receive friends at the Cowden home from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, March 19, 2006. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Monday, March 20 at 11a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Concert Fund or to the charity of your choice.
