Tonight my betrothed and I made roasted lamb for dinner, and decided to have with it our newly acquired 2007 Syrah form Dry Mill Winery.
Being relatively new to wines I am still learning the characters of the seeming endless variety of wine grapes that are out there. This summer I encountered my first Syrah, and found I like it. I do not prefer the heavier reds but the Syrahs do touch me.
The color is a deep rich red that come close to purple.
This bottle has a smokiness on the nose that I have not come across in other wines. It is not a heavy smoke. More like the smell of a oak fire from a distance. As the wine breathes, this smoke fades, but not completely, and lets the full berry tone come forward. On the palate the first taste is the berries, with a hint of the warm smoke. Tobacco and spice tones linger in the background. The finish is full of spice, reminding one of pepper and currants. The feel in the mouth is full but soft, with a gentle dryness and well balanced tannins.
The wine was an excellent chose for our meal, complimenting the lamb well. A heavier red would have overpowered the delicate flavors of the meat, but this Syrah was firm without dominating.
An excellent wine that I would most certain have again, and intend to if I can.
