Ok. Once upon a time I use this journal to keep my whiskey tasting notes in one place. Well, I have recently (under the influence of my fiancee) started to drink an increasing wide variety of wines. In particular we have been exploring the wines of Virginia. There is such a wide range of wines and wineries that it is imposable to keep it all in ones head. So I'm going to staring keeping notes here.
The bottle we had with dinner today was Blenheim Vineyards' 2008 Painted Red. We bought this bottle at Blenheim when we visited them this spring. By the way, the view and the wonderful facilities are almost worth a trip themselves, the exultant wine not withstanding. But back to the bottle of the day. The Painted Red has a wonderful nose full of berries and dark cherry, with hints of dark chocolate and tobacco. The color is a dark purple. Fresh from the bottle there is an unpleasant astringency in the mouth, but this fades when the wine has breathed for only a few minutes. The mouth feel is firm but smooth, with mild tannins. The taste is similar to the noose with lots of fruit, mostly cherry, and some please earthly undertone. The finish is dry, but only slightly, and clean. There is more depth to this wine that I can convey here. We had this bottle with some roast beef, lightly seasoned with pepper and rosemary, and potatoes. The wine complected the meal well with out overpowering. It has sufficient body and strength to not be lost in the beef, but did not dominate. It would also go well with milk cholate I think , but may not have the balls to deal with the high cacao dark chocolates. My Better Half suggests that a dark chocolate cake would be an excellent compliment to this wine.
I would certainly have this wine again.
