Changes

Earlier this week I gave notice to my current employer of my intent to resign. I verbally accepted an offer with another company almost a month ago and it took them four weeks to get me an actual signed offer. Reactions have been generally positive and congratulatory, though my team understands that I'm leaving a pretty big hole for them to fill no matter how smooth I try to make the transition.

I'm changing sides. I've spent my entire career as a customer and end-user. Now I'll be working on the vendor side of the corporate equation. I'm super excited about my new role. I'll be dealing with the most interesting parts of what I do now for lots of different customers while not having to deal with the day to day crap. I also won't have an environment of my own to support so my 3am phone calls and maintenance windows should be reduced. As my current team teased me about, though, I'll have to actually deal with customers and be nice to them. They found the idea amusing that now they will be able to hang up on me and verbally abuse me and I'll have to take it. It's been a while since I've needed my Customer Service Voice. Having to work Normal Business Hours and wear Actual Business Attire is also going to be a huge adjustment.

The other nice thing is that my new team is all remote. My manager is actually in Colorado and the rest of the team is scattered across the west coast. I can have an office if I want, wherever, or work out of my house as long as I'm somewhere in the region we support. I'm going to stay in OC for a bit, at least, so I can get acclimated to my new job but eventually I'm probably going to return to San Diego. Although this could also be the opportunity for which I've been looking to go back to the Pacific Northwest. It's so weird to finally have such an option.

I'd appreciate those of you with details to keep them out of public commentary. I've always discussed my employment history vaguely in this public forum for a reason. Thanks in advance.
