Hi from a Zakopane internet cafe. It's a bit cold and miserable here, but this appears to be why vodka is so popular. I've been getting lost in the Carpathian mountains, riding very unsafe-looking cable cars, eating the most unbelievable-looking veggie burger you ever did see and sketching a few things. Good holiday so far. We move on to Krakow the ( Read more... )

A good time indeed! Vodka does of course help... especially when it comes in a variety of flavours and stupidly high strengths!

It's not the Carpathians in Zakopane!!! it's the Tatras!!! so there.
When you go to Krakow, be sure to visit the Museum Narodowe and check out the paintings by Witkacy...he's amazing...he was from Zakopane, actually...a real mad genius!

Doh!! Thanks for the correction there (examines own shoes for few moments)

And now I'm really annoyed, because in all the excitement, I didn't make it to another internet cafe after writing this post, and therefore didn't get your advice about Witkacy's paintings in time. Grrr! Oh well, there were a few things we never got around to doing in this holiday, so at least that's one more thing for my to-do list when I go back next time.

And I will go back!

Polish vodka does indeed rock! You need to go there some time and try it for yourself :)

Fortunately, the cold and wetness did improve a couple of days after I wrote this post.

and to add to my other message...Witkacy would be in the section for Polish art in the Museum Narodowe. hopefully that part will be open now...it was closed when i was there in 1999, but i managed to blag my way in by saying i had come all the way from Canada just to see the Witkacys. (which wasn't quite true, i'd actually come all the way from Wloclawek, where i was teaching at the time). Such a blag would NEVER have worked in Moscow, by the way...
