When news spread that a girl called Choi Sooyoung would be joining the school, many dismissed it off and merely shrugged.
Until the day Choi Sooyoung appeared.
In an instant, she had garnered the attention of the entire school. With a face and body like hers, who wouldn't take notice?
She was so pretty, and had a figure way better than those cheerleaders of the cheerleading squad. What made the difference that she was extremely clever, and had entered the course of engineering, a course girls would rarely take. Which meant that the proportion of boys to girls was basically, 30 to 1.
It wasn't surprising that she had a immensely large group of admirers, which she turned down politely one-by-one. In particular, she had turned down Eunhyuk, the leader of the jocks and captain of the soccer team (who had dumped his cheerleader captain girlfriend in order to pursue Sooyoung) not-so-politely.
Life went about as normal, until he entered the school.

He didn't have a group of admirers though. Except for one girl.

What annoyed Eunhyuk was that Sooyoung paid much more attention to that geek/nerd rather than him. She seemed to spend a lot of time with him, studying together and chatting with him happily, as if they had been friends for years.
"Yah, you nerd. At such an old age, you're still trying to become the teacher's pet? What a loser." Eunhyuk shoved Kyuhyun off his chair, causing his large spectacles to fly across the floor beneath Sooyoung's table.
Kyuhyun simply kept quiet, feeling around for his spectacles. He felt a warm hand lift him up and he suddenly regained his vision - Sooyoung had helped him up and placed his glasses back on.
She turned to glare at Eunhyuk. "Don't flatter yourself. Just because you aren't that handsome, doesn't mean that you have to vent your anger on someone more handsome than you." Her wit had the entire class laughing, except for Eunhyuk who was humiliated to the bone.

When school ended, Kyuhyun made his way towards Sooyoung's desk as the students filed out of class. "Thankyou." He whispered quietly, so soft that no one but she could hear him.
"You don't have to thank me, that idiot deserved it."
"I don't understand... why are you protecting me from them? I'm actually fine being called a nerd, you know. Since I look like one."
"Don't ever say that, Kyuhyun. You are nowhere near a nerd, inside or out. You're the warmest and kindest, and most honest guy I have ever met, and that mushroom hair - it just makes you look absolutely cute and adorable. Much cuter than any other guy in the class, in fact."
Her words sent a fuzzy feeling through his stomach, as Sooyoung ruffled his hair affectionately before leaving the classroom.
Yes, Kyuhyun was definitely falling fast, and hard for Sooyoung.

They became best friends after that episode, sharing secrets, jokes, studying secrets. This irked Eunhyuk even more, but neither of them cared. She learnt about his dreams of wanting to become a singer, maybe join a band; he learnt about how she wished she wasn't blessed with such good looks, since many liked her for her appearance more than her true inner self. In other words, they had become inseparable.
Kyuhyun never admitted his feelings to Sooyoung. Not because for fear of angering Eunhyuk and more than thirty guys, but he was embarrassed of his appearance - worried that it would affect Sooyoung, and worried that she had only seen him as simply a best friend.

On Sooyoung's 21st birthday, Kyuhyun suddenly disappeared from the school without a trace. All that he left was a letter:
Dear Sooyoung,
I know you must be feeling extremely terrible (not to mention angry at me) today, but I am so sorry I had to disappear from school. It may take months, even a year before we meet again. I'm sorry that I cannot tell you the reason why I left, but I just want to know that I've always loved you, since the day you protected me from everyone else. I hope that you will forgive me.

When he left, it was like a part of her had left - she had never felt more lonely in her life. She had secretly cried for days, weeks, months.

Instantly, Sooyoung rushed up to the news bulletin board. There, she saw Kyuhyun in the largest article. What shocked her was the drastic change in his appearance. Spiky hair, cool jacket and jeans - he looked absolutely handsome, not to mention HOT.
That night, she had immediately updated herself with every single variety show he had went on. With his wonderful singing voice and devilishly good looks, he had gained immense popularity among the Korean population.
What shocked her was that while watching one of the interviews, the interviewer asked, "So Kyuhyun, what is your ideal type like? I'm sure many girls are hoping to be your type, since majority of your hands are female."
Kyuhyun had simply replied, "I don't have an ideal type. I only know that I only love one girl, and I will always love her forever. However, I know that I have hurt her by leaving her and suddenly choosing the career of singing, and I really hope that she will forgive me."
His voice rang with every bit of sincerity.

A month later, Sooyoung was walking back home when she suddenly spotted a hooded man wearing glasses walking towards her. Though her initial reaction was to run away in fear, a sense of longing stirred in her heart. Could it be...?
When he finally reached her, he slowly took of his glasses. Sooyoung could only gape at him. "Kyuhyun..."
All of a sudden, he went on his knees. "Forgive me" He whispered.
"It isn't your fault. I've always known your dream to pursue singing as a career. You look really good as a singer." She pulled him up immediately.
He suddenly enveloped her into a warm embrace, breathing her familar scent of rose and vanilla. "I love you" He whispered into her ear.
"I'm never admitted my feelings, because I didn't want to embarrass you with my looks and identity - so I told myself that I had to transform, to make myself worthy of you."
She didn't reply, but only leaned into his embrace even more.
"I promised that I would grant your 21st birthday wish, but before that" He suddenly took out a sparking diamond ring, "Will you be my girlfriend? I'll make up the rest to you for the rest of our lifetime, if you like."
Tears welled up in her eyes. "I will" she whispered.
Whoops of joy followed as he lifted her in his arms and spun her around. At that moment, the world ceased to exist, except for them...
When he put her down finally, he asked, "So, what's your 21st birthday wish? Even if you wish for the moon, I'll do anything to get it for you" He asked.
Sooyoung simply replied, "You've already granted it." She tiptoed up to kiss Kyuhyun on the lips.
For she had fallen in love with him the day he had walked into the school, mushroom hair cut/ large spectacles and all...
