Only In America

Ah, the wonders of American politics. "Do politicians care about what I think?" you wonder as you finish the letter you're writing. "Will they even read this?"

I have news for you, citizens. News that will change your views of politics. News that will change how you get involved in your country. News . . . that will change your lives.

I wrote an email (the lazy, high-tech way, I know) to presidential candidate Barack Obama the other day. It was well written, I think, and clearly showed what I wanted to know and my opinion on the issue at hand. What was the issue, you ask? The PATRIOT Act. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patriot_Act for those who aren't familiar with the act) It stated I was a concerned citizen and that I believe this violates our rights as said citizens. (Not to try and sway *your* opinion on the matter.)

Well, tonight I opened an email from Obama. It was wonderful to see that they actually *do* care enough to respond and I was fully prepared for his opinion on the PATRIOT Act.

Boy, was I WRONG.

"Dear Friend," it began.

"Thank you for contacting Senator Obama and Obama for America. We appreciate hearing from you about this important issue."

Well, that's nice of them. I appreciate getting a response.

It then continued . . .

"Senator Obama believes that the deeply personal decision of whether or not to abort a pregnancy should remain among her family, her doctor, and her conscience.  For women who choose it, he believes abortion should be safe, legal and rare-in line with the Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade."

Wait, what . . . ?

"At the same time, government should do better at encouraging alternatives to abortion. Senator Obama supports proposals to decrease the costs of adoption and make the process easier.  He cosponsored the Prevention First Act in the Senate, which seeks to expand access to preventive health care services that reduce unintended pregnancies, reduce the number of abortions, and improve access to women's health care.  Women all around America should have access to quality family planning services, and we must do more to realize that goal."

Why, thank you, Senator Obama, for supporting my choice in abortion matters. I have one question though.

What does that have to do with the PATRIOT ACT? Maybe I'm missing something? Perhaps you reply this way to every woman that emails you or sends you a letter. If so, what do you tell men?

So again, thank *you* Senator Obama, for answering my question in the way only a politician could. It's the Checkers Speech all over again, only the topic was abortion, not your dog.
