Well I’ve been gainfully employed for more than a week now. Although to be fair I wont get paid for a month so it’s not that gainfully employed. The first couple of days were very slow as I got all my systems set up and sorted out what I should be doing. I’ve been given a pretty interesting project but I’ve pretty much completed it and can’t do anything more on it until one of the guys gets back from holiday or sickness or wherever he is.

It’s quite interesting at my new London based bank because they were so late to the market there are some things that they are much more advanced in some areas but miles behind in others.

The people are pretty friendly and the environment is good. I’m getting the bus to and from work which is a bit odd. I’ve never really used buses before but there is no intelligent link with the tube. Bus should take 20 mins but the variance is quite high depending on how long it takes before a bus arrives (0 to 20 mins) and how busy the traffic is (15-25 mins). Still it’s ok.

My biggest problem is laundry. I don’t have a washing machine so I have to go to the laundrette. While I wasn’t working it wasn’t a big problem. I used to quite enjoy packing my backpack with dirty clothes, wandering down to the laundrette, a quick chat with the old ladies who always seem to be there. Pop back after an hour to transfer the now clean but wet clothes to the huge driers and a final trip down the road to fetch the now clean, dry and wonderfully warm clothes back to my tiny flat.

My tan is now fading badly and it seems ages ago rather than weeks ago when I was sitting on my hotel balcony overlooking Waikiki beach. Also the onset of a crippling case of man flu on Sunday dampened my post hol glow. Of course come Monday I was forced to go to work, mainlining Lemsip rather than not turn up on my 4th day working for the company. I’d failed to record the phone number of the office so it wasn’t as if I could even have called up to give my pathetic excuses. The evil disease seems to have abated now although the skin around my nose is now peeling and cracked due to excessive blowing of the nose. I even bought the more expensive Balsam tissues to try to avoid this. I’ve just had a look at the back of the packet and my tissues have an ingredients list!

Behenyl alcohol
Stearyl alcohol
Cetearyl laurate
Mineral oil
Allantoin
Alpha-tocopherol

Now I’m not surprised my nose is such an unsightly sight. If I’d know I was rubbing alcohol on it…
