So, the other night, Curt and I watched one of our first rentals from our new Netflix account: ONG BAK 2, a Thai action movie starring and directed by Tony Jaa.
By all that is in heaven, that movie sucked, bit, blew, and every other word that could possibly connotate utter negativity.
The worst part is that I didn't even have high hopes for this movie. Tony Jaa's movies are notable for absolutely fantastic physical action, punctuated by sub-par acting and paper-thin plots; kinda like many of Jackie Chan's movies, but with an even greater disparity between action and story.
Ong Bak 2 couldn't even pull that off. The story was an absolute mess, even by action movie standards. The acting was horrid. And the action? Well, there were one or two nice moments, like, "okay, that was kind of a cool kick just now", but that was really about it. Curt and I were riffing on the movie from moment one, but after an hour of that, we ran out of steam, and just slogged through the rest of the movie on inertia.
I loved Ong Bak 1, and The Protector, Jaa's other two movies. But I have to tell you all, do not even BOTHER with Ong Bak 2. Save yourself the 90 minutes and put it towards something else. Afterwards, I needed a palate cleanser, and ended up settling on BOLT, the disney adventure from last year. By no means a *bad* movie, but not especially good either, firmly entrenched in mediocrity save for a few cute lines in the script. And even that was a breath of fresh air after the deathsuck of Ong Bak 2.
