Innocence and Experience (part 1 of ?)

May 01, 2011 16:06

heh.  Funny how it always seems to be the Doctor that tempts me out of hiding on here.  While I loved Series 5, though, (and am loving Eleven with a passion) there was nothing I either felt I wanted to fix through fanfic or needed to add to.  It was all already perfect.

Series 6 brings Eleven/River, however :-)  Definitely doesn't need fixing, but oh boy is it ever a feast for the imagination.  I find the idea of the balance of the way they will behave around each other changing as they meet to be absolutely fascinating.

I know I have bad updating habits, but I imagine this as the first little snippet of many.  It still works as a stand-alone, I think, but after I've gone out to buy chocolate I'll be carrying on writing :-)

I hope you (if there is anybody out there who'd even be aware of this) enjoy.

Innocence and Experience

“You could come with us.”

He’d like that. He thinks. She’s maddening but intriguing, an itch that seems to be permanently unscratchable; sometimes lately he’s unsure whether or not he prefers her in sight where he can keep an eye on her, or far away where she can’t unsettle things.

“I escape often enough, thank you.”

Prison. Funny. Funny ha-ha and funny completely weird.

Why are you here?

Can you even call it a prison if you can just waltz out any time you like?

And if you can, why won’t you come now?

“and I have a promise to live up to.”

Hm.

Her fingers brush his bow tie, straightening it. It feels … familiar. Easy. Strange.

“You’ll understand soon enough.”

Don’t believe you, but fair enough.

“OK. Up to you. See you next time. Call me.”

“What?”

What?

“That’s it?”

Er …

“What’s the matter with you?”

OK; he’s misstepped somehow here.

It’d be nice to know how. He even asks, though he doesn’t hold out much hope for a comprehensible answer.

“Have I forgotten something?”

She appears to be on the edge of laughter. She shakes her head, an expression of disbelief giving way to her usual teasing smile. He’s used to seeing that from her, now.

“Oh … shut up.”

Oh. My.

Definitely not used to this.

um. Lips. Breaths.

Her hand on his cheek.

Warmth. Shoulder - soft. Warm.

“Right. OK … interesting.”

And now she’s looking at you like you grew an extra nose.

“What’s wrong?”

So much.

“You’re acting like we’ve never done that before.”

“We haven’t.”

I have watched you die, though

“We haven’t?” Soft. She looks hurt. He doesn’t want to think about why.
