Dingling Tomb - Beijing, China - April 25th, 2012

One of the fascinating areas we would visit this day would be the Dingling Tomb. The Dingling Tomb is where one of the Ming Emperors is enthroned with his two wives (one whom gave him a son, another who did not). The area has come to be lucky for long life.

Back in the 1950's the underground Palace Tomb was excavated and was later opened to the public. It is the only excavated Ming Tomb in Beijing. Within Beijing are buried 13 of the 16 Ming Emperors each whose Tomb and life carries a different legacy. The Emperor housed here is Zhu Yijun also called the Wanli Emperor and he is associated with longevity due to how long his rule was.

In his tomb people had thrown lots of money (on the stone slab you see when you first enter, on the Dragon Thrones that were his and his two wives, and on the recreations of the sarcophagus themselves. In that way he has been immortalized as people throughout China and the world put money on his grave hoping to have as long of legacy and life as he did.

The grounds themselves look like the Ming Tomb area in Nanjing (and the other areas in Beijing) which was our tour guide chose this area...for the underground palace is something amazing to see, as well as the near religious ritual that has come to take place on the grounds of the Emperor and his wives.
