Chloe was standing in the middle of the Talon. Looking over the empty coffee shop that held so many memories, her gaze occasionally lingering on the one or other empty table, she couldn’t help but feel nostalgic. The coffee house that was her home was more than that just now. It represented her old life. The one that she had with Clark, Lois and even Lana and all the rest of her Justice League boys.
She was leaving this all behind. She was going to step out of the door with nothing more than the clothes she was wearing, and with no one else than a man she had a slight crush on, the same that she needed her help.
Davis stood behind her. She knew because she could feel the heat radiate off of him, even though he made sure to keep a distance from her. He was still so distanced from her, even though now of all times he should understand what she was sacrificing to make sure that he would be alright. To make sure that he didn’t turn into the killer he so loathed and feared at the same time.
“Chloe” his voice was smooth and clear, just like it had always been, even before he or she knew what it was that was lurking in the darkness, “we need to go now!”
“Yes” she replied, without turning. She took a last glance at her old life, and then turned toward him, taking a few steps before Davis too turned to walk outside. But then she stopped and he noticed, because he turned back to her and looked at her, seemingly to ask if she wanted to stay, but not having to verbalise it because she next said “I forgot my jacket!”
She realised it seemed silly to run away without a jacket, but she hadn’t planned to take anything with her, just like he wasn’t going to take anything with him. Wherever it was that they were both going to go to, they would start from scratch. Without any strings attached or relicts of the past.
“Wait” he said, came to stand close to her, and took off his jacket. He draped the too large jacket over her shoulders and even though it seemed like she was swimming in his clothes, Davis could help but feel that this was how it was supposed to feel, warm, fuzzy and absolutely right.
Without thinking of it much, he next bend a little, took her hand in his and started to roll the sleeves of the jacket up, so that the length would be adjusted.
She watched with fascination as Davis worked on the second sleeve, and wondered if he would be this gentle with her from now on.
To her, it looked like Davis suddenly was aware of what he was doing, because his back stiffened and when he straitened up to turn and leave through the door, he didn’t try to look back. She knew that he would be trying to keep his distance even more now that they would be leaving Smallville and Metropolis together. So she decided that she would make him understand that she was doing this also for his sake.
She came and followed him through the door, then took hold of his much bigger hand and tugged slightly on it. She couldn’t help but feel like a small and lost child, even though she knew that there was no reason for that. Instead she smiled at him when he turned his head to her, and said earnestly “We’re in this together! You and me! We’re a team now!”
She got a relieved and honest smile back from him, but she could still see that the troubling inside Davis was still there, lurking just like the beast that was lurking inside the darkness, threatening to get out.
She pushed these thoughts away and instead followed Davis to the car they were going to use for at least the next two weeks, until they would switch cars and drive as far away as they could.
It was true. They were in this together. And she was going to make sure that Davis would understand this.
