I've voiced my thoughts in the previous post and in various comments to this one already but here's my main 2 cents
- layout - it totally needs to be changed to something easier to the eye and more suitable for the pupose of this community which is reading mainly. I think a layout competition would be the best. Maybe everyone could suggest a pic to be used or leave it to the artist's choice, but i think a competition would be more suitable since there's more to choose from. On the other hand it would be nice if there was someone who could help with proper coding in the possibility someone can make a beautiful design but doesn't know how to implement it.
- betas. - personal opinion: i think betas are compulsory and very helpful. On the other hand i agree that finding a really good beta is hard and a list of good and willing betas is a treasure. However even if i beta most of my work i know i've posted (to this community even) unbetaed stories and shouldn't preach. I did spellcheck and proofread 3 or 4 times before posting though as i think it is important for one's own image as a writer and out of respect for the reader. I think ultimately it's a writer's own choice to use or not to use betas, and i advocate for using, but openly lobbying about not using betas is wrong as i for one have been in a lot of fandoms and had my eyes bleed from bad grammar, bad punctuation, horrid stories, illiteracy and general disinterest in what the reader has to go through. All in the name of "at least there's something to read". It hurts having nothing to read but in my opinion it hurts even more to read crap.
on the same subject a banner competition would also be cool. Now that i think about it a general "community graphics competition would be neat". Par example, if one submits a layout for the competition they should propose a banner for it too. It's easily done plus keeps a sense of overall consistency.
I don't think that banners need to be the same as the layout, although it is nice. I don't see why we shouldn't have a selection of banners available to people. If we can perhaps come up with some sort of logo or image that we keep standard across any future layouts and designs, then that could become our "signature" and it would help keep some sort of similarity or theme through all of them, even if they look different.
