my cousin aleah entered a poem in the jamaica plain gazette poetry contest, for shits and giggles, didn't think she would win anything. she ended up winning the GRAND PRIZE of $1000!!! this girl is 13 (the lowest age you could be to enter) and she kicked ass. hell fucking yeah.
Change of Heart

As I reached out
my hand
to hold the one beautiful crystal,
my breath coming out in whips of mist,
every tree
bare,
unique and wonderful,
holding a deep secret,
as I prepared to catch the one beauty,
I thought,
"should I really be taking the life away from
this one,
small,
flake?"
At that moment,
I felt something watching me,
a great fire deep in the center of a
powerful stare.
I pulled my hand away
just in time to
watch
the flake
fall
to
the
ground,
its beauty forever etched in the earth.
