Where we tend to fall on The Race Issue(s).

May 31, 2009 17:18

You know, we are an extremely bizarre position when it comes to the discussion of Racial Topics, and we usually don't discuss it in depth, besides commenting on instances of racist behaviour. Our individual histories don't match the front body's, and for the most part, our ethnicities don't match the body's. (We're diverse, but we just haven't had any black people join the system yet.)

Nobody here tolerates racism at all. If we see it, we'll call it out. There's just no point in being racist, besides 'following tradition', and tradition isn't always a good thing. We're sick and tired of people who feel they can just sit around stereotyping people because they're not white.

White members of the group feel strange arguing from 'the black (or person-of-colour, depending on the situation) point of view', because for a lot of us, it just feels inauthentic. I mean, I'd be considered a WASP, and I...would just feel as though I were co-opting something, even with the body's appearance. I do recognise white privilege when I see it, but...I just find myself in a bind.

We know other groups in the opposite situation, actually: their front bodies might be white, but they have non-white system members, and feel as though they're in a bind discussing the same issues.
