Fic: Earth and Sky (Roy/Dick)

Mar 29, 2009 19:58

So this is just a small musing on one of my personal favorite relationships.  This is the first (sorta)real fic I've posted, so I hope it's good!

Title: Earth and Sky
Author: Singer
Characters: Dick, Roy
Pairings: Roy/Dick
Rating: PG-13 (someone says some dirty words!)
Disclaimer: Not my Characters...*broods in her corner*
Warnings:  I reject DCU reality and substitute my own! (completely disregard the whole black hand fiasco)

It had been a while since he'd last seen Dick.  The last he had heard, Dick was just starting to return to the cheerful, less-broody, bird-boy he had lost somewhere along the way.  Or that's what Wally had said, so Roy figured it was safe be hopeful.

He didn't know exactly what all had happened to his Robbie to break him so badly.

There were plenty of rumors going around of course.  After all, when you run with a circle full of super-hearing and speedsters, gossip gets around.  But none of those rumors were bad enough to cause all this.  He had seen Dick weather a lot shit, but this last round had scared him.  Terrified him in fact.  It seemed like Dick had lost his innate sense of which way was up.

Not that he had ever doubted that he'd get his Robbie back.  Dick was just a bounce back kind of guy.  Come to think of it... Dick was a bounce anyway kind of guy.  So there had never been a cause to question if Dick would come back.  It was just a matter of when and with how many new scars.

But a slightly damaged Dick Grayson was a Dick Grayson none the less. And Dick Grayson was his, plain and simple.  And for that; Roy was willing to wait.

He had his little girl, his larger than life father-turned-Mayor, full arrow clan, and job with Watchtower benefits to keep him plenty busy.  So he would stay patient and be there when Dick was ready.

This didn't make waiting an easy task, though.  He practically ached to just go over to that museum, grab Dick, drag him back to his apartment, put bars on the windows, and sic Lian on him with her puppy dog eyes full force.  That could probably hold him for three days.  A week if Lian threw in the lip wobble too.  But by this time Roy had learned that as much as Dick thrived off of the touch of another, there were some times he just needed to be free to fly.  You just couldn't keep him cooped up at times like that.  Bruce had made that mistake once, and Dick had moved to a whole other city.

Dick lived to fly.  He belonged in the sky, it was his essence.  He was the sky in person.

Constantly changing.  Shifting clouds, rising sun, phasing moon.  The Sky is constant motion.

In one moment it's sunny; it's warm and bright and all you want to do is forsake the indoors and bask in it.  It's invigorating, and suddenly nothing is as bad as it seemed.  One moment later it's storming.  Thunder shakes you to your very bones, trailing after lightning strikes capable of scalding the sun.  It carries an intensity that's awe inspiring.  And then as soon as it comes, it passes.  Another moment after, it may be completely unreadable.  It's a flat, cloudy, grey that could give way to either extreme and hints at neither.  Roy prefers not to linger on this aspect.  It's the sunsets and sunrises that truly take his breath away.  They're like seeing a once in a lifetime performance from a master artist; stunning and unique.  And of course, there are those rare moments when the Sky pulls out all the stops to give you a simple, fragile, elegant, radiant rainbow.  Those are moments Roy truly cherishes.

All of that isn't to say the Sky is flighty.  It's always there after all.  Its stars keep to their patterns no matter the names they're given.  The sun always rises in the east and the moon always follows its cycle.  Periods of open day and mysterious night form a perfect balance.  So it is constant, just a moving sort of constant.

Roy, on the other hand, is more like the Earth.  Firm and slow to change.  He'd rather keep his feet firmly planted on the ground and leave the flying to the birds, thank you very much!

The Earth is strong and steady.  It is hard and rough on the outside, but warm deep inside its core.  Its fire can't be extinguished and boils over with devastating consequences when put under pressure.  It keeps its gems buried beneath the scars on its surface.  A person has to put in the time and effort to get at them.  And if you want resilience, just look at the number of invasions, crises, and general shit it's already survived.  Yet despite this show of strength, it is still vibrant and full of life.  It can breathtaking when you know where to look.  It is the a constant shelter and provides all it can for its children.

The Earth is security and dependability.

And it is all this that gives Roy the strength and patience to wait for Dick.  Because as strange as it seems, the Earth is in love with the Sky, and the Sky is as changing as the Earth is steady.

After all, it's only when the Earth and Sky meet that they reach the horizon.

.......
...........
................. Oh screw patience!

They're both in the same city now, Lian's looking particularly sweet and innocent today, and Wally's forecast was at least partly sunny (a guy who fight's the Weather Wizard twice monthly should know).... It's time Roy made one more grab at that horizon line.

END.

........................My Roy!muse is smirking at me.  *eyes her muse*

I hope you enjoyed!
