I was just looking through my new issue of Redbook and I saw an ad for an Olay Total Effects Serum. The mantra they had on the page to chant to yourself (after having used the product of course) was "I just turned 29, I just turned 29." Ok, being that I have been 30 for several months now, and actually getting closer and closer to 31, I feel I speak from experience. There is nothing wrong with 30. On occasion, yes, I will say, "I'm getting old!" This is mostly in jest because I can look in the mirror and know that I do not look 30. Maybe this also has to do with the fact that just about any given time I walk into a bar, Beverages and More, or even the grocery store and want to buy liquor, I get carded. What I find funny is getting carded in BevMo as I stand there with my BevMo card in hand. I guess it's possible I could have taken the card from someone else, and therefore that is why they carded me. Anyway, still, I have known people in the past who all but planned their funeral for the day they turned 30. Why?! I have, and always will believe that age is a state of mind. Recently, a friend of mine who shall remain nameless, posted in her own blog about how she was hoping things would change before she turned 30 because she was really dreading it, blah blah. Ok, again.................what is the big deal? I think it was the day after I had my 30th birthday, I had about 15 min of feeling a little weirded out at my age. Yep, that's it, 15 min. As you can see, I didn't dwell on it so much.
Upon turning 30, I did start using antiaging lotions. This was not really monumental though because I had been using moisturizer for years. I just simply stopped buying Neutragenia and started buying Olay Regenerist. Does that make me old? It's not like I picked up a bottle of Geritol to go with it. Some things about us change. When you are in your late 20's into early 30's, you start to develop 'laugh lines.' Not a cause for alarm in my book. When I am in the sun for extended periods of time, I use sunscreen. Not because I fear age spots, but because I should use it anyway. I take multivitamins to help keep me healthy. I prefer to have a seat at a concert rather than stand in the sweaty masses. I don't think I am ready for the senior discount (not that I wouldn't mind having it, discounts are ALWAYS good!)
I look at the people on my friends list and I realize that....I think all but 1 is well under the age of 30. One person on my list, and you know who you are, tells me on a regular basis, "30 is the new 20, 40 is the new 30." And ya know what? She's right. Age is just a number, a mindset. You only feel your age if you want to.
