I made a rare visit to
First Avenue, last night. I really love that place. It seemed blacker everywhere... even the top of Pete the bartender's head... but still that lovely cavern I missed. I responded to a MySpace bulletin, yesterday afternoon, and nabbed "house list +1" for
The Sisters of Mercy show. I called
debridement to froth about my luck, and we came up with
wodurid as a candidate for the "+1" spot. I rang him up, twisted his arm (well, not really) and talked particulars. We met up, got in and started the people watching. Many familiar faces were out, and that made up for the later silliness.
The first band,
Hypernova, were fantastic. One of the early tunes seemed too upbeat for the singer's somber voice, so I joked about him being the depressed fill-in wedding singer. The set got edgier as it went on, though. I'd definitely see them, again.
We wandered and saw more friendlies until TSOM fired up the fog machines, and then found our way back downstairs. I'd cruised some blogs on Google yesterday, and I saw people mention things like...
For a minute, I thought I was watching a stage version of John Carpenter’s “The Fog”
It isn't possible that you could SEE the Sisters onstage through the massive solid bank of fog...
...specifically the sisters of mercy, who have a passionate love affair with fog machines that rivals romeo and juliet...
Well, it was all true. They brought a few English moors' worth of fog along with them, and we saw nothing but hints of Eldritch, except for a good peek during the encore. The balance of the set was fog turned colors by the lighting. Reeeee-diculous. I had fog chats with about seven people until the music stopped. What's in that stuff? We had to have a lungful, since the gloom stretched way over to coat check and the pinball machines. The people watching got tough, too, but I had a bottle of Newcastle and good folks to stand with until we left. Still damn glad I got to go.
I had to play this song when I got home, since they skipped it.
