“Wake up!” Madison heard an oddly familiar voice say. She opened her eyes to see Lilly Kane sitting on her bed. “Finally!” Lilly exclaimed, “I was beginning to think that dirty Dick dream would never end.”

“What!” Madison bolted up. “How did you know what I was dreaming- I mean, what? You’re dead! How are you here?”

Lilly unfolded her arms and reached towards Madison’s shoulder. Madison shivered as Lilly’s hand went right through her, as if she were made of air. “I’m not really here. I’m kind of like a ghost!” Madison blinked and rubbed her eyes expecting Lilly to disappear, but when she looked up, Lilly was still there.

“Okayyy,” Madison said, dragging the last syllable out. “Then why are you ‘not here’?”

Lilly’s smile faded and her eyes became dark.

“My soul is doomed to walk the earth until my murder is solved, and as a side project, I’m haunting you for being a ruthless bitch.”

The color returned to Lilly’s face and she smiled again,

“So let the haunting begin,” she said cheerfully.

Madison rolled her eyes, “You can’t scare me. You’re not even real.”

Lilly hopped off the bed and went over to Madison’s dresser. “One of the advantages of being dead is I can read everyone’s mind,” Lilly explained as she sifted through a drawer. “A-ha!” Lilly called out, as she lifted a diary.

“How did you do that?” Madison asked. “You passed through me before!”

The lock on the diary un-clicked as Lilly traced her finger along it. The book opened to reveal that it was not a book at all, rather a collection of pictures, notes, and other random objects. Lilly dumped the contents onto Madison’s bed as she talked, “It takes a lot of practice. And you have to have powerful connections up there!”

Lilly picked up a picture of young Madison with her arm around young Veronica, both sitting on the curb in their soccer uniforms eating ice cream. “How cute!” Lilly cooed. “Now how did one of these two turn into such a cold-hearted bitch?”

Madison gazed into the picture. It was one of her favorites from her childhood. She started talking, “I remember that day. It was the soccer championships, and our team had just lost because of me. Everyone else on the team made fun of me for kicking the ball into the wrong goal, but Veronica told them to back off, and made her dad take us out for ice cream. It was the first time someone had ever stood up for me. We became best friends after that.”

Madison put the picture down and picked up another, this one of Veronica, Lilly, and half of Madison.

“After a couple of years, Veronica met another girl who quickly replaced me as her best friend. At first we were a tripod, at least I thought, but I realized that the other girl only tolerated me because of Veronica. I tried everything to cut the third girl out, but the more I shunned her, the more I noticed Veronica drifting away. I couldn’t stand it anymore, so I started a nasty rumor about the girl- well, you, and Veronica confronted me. I told her she had to choose between you and me, and she told me she wouldn’t do that, so I told her we couldn’t be friends anymore.”

“Yeah, I never liked you,” Lilly said, as she fingered one half of a ‘Best Friends Forever’ charm. “You tried so hard to be just like Veronica, but you never had any thoughts or feelings of your own. Hanging out with you was like hanging out with a robot.”

Madison yanked the charm out of Lilly’s hands and retorted “That is so not true. I was my own person and-”

“Whatever, I don’t care,” Lilly cut her off with. “Now tell me why you became a bitch to Veronica after I, you know,” Lilly pointed to her head wound, which had suddenly appeared.

Madison recoiled at the sight, but caught herself after a moment and said, “Mainly because she exists.”

“Errrr! Wrong answer,” Lilly responded. “Now tell me the real reason, and remember that I can hear what you’re thinking!”

Madison didn’t say anything, so Lilly got in her face and started yelling. “Do you honestly think Veronica deserved the torment you put her through? All those nasty rumors you spread that you knew weren’t true? And don’t even give me the ‘Omg, she kissed my boyfriend’ because you saw how messed up she was, might I add because of you, and you saw Dick kiss her. How can you rationalize-”

“Stop it!” Madison screamed, angry tears forming in her eyes. “I know Veronica never did anything to deserve it. Any of it.”

The tears were pouring out now, “I was just so jealous of her. She had everything I ever wanted: Popularity, a super cute boyfriend, perfect hair and skin, and brains. I thought if I were friends with her, I’d be just as perfect, but no. I was always ‘Veronica’s friend’ or ‘the boring, hot chick.’ And then she threw away our entire friendship standing up for you, which I still don’t understand. You’re not that great!”

Lilly laughed, “You’re not the brightest, are you Maddy-O? You really think that being a bitch to Veronica gets back at me?” Madison nodded. “It doesn’t work that way. You could have revived your pathetic little friendship by helping her out through a rough time, like she did for you, but you chose to be snobby. And now you’re miserable.”

“Do you think she still wants me to be her friend?” Madison’s voice squeaked.

“No, of course not,” Lilly snapped, “But you better apologize to her for everything you’ve ever done wrong. You’ll find a little present from me when you wake up that won’t go away until she’s convinced that you’re genuinely sorry. And by the way, I totally am that great!”

Madison’s alarm clock startled her out of her dream. She was rubbing her eyes when she realized something felt incredibly itchy. She walked to the bathroom and looked in her pants. “CRABS? Motherfucker!” Lilly’s threat flashed to the front of Madison’s mind. Madison grunted and tried to think of a game plan.

Veronica sat at her usual lunch table with Wallace. She was laughing at his Dave Chappelle impression when someone cleared their throat to get her attention. “Can I help you, Madison?”

“I need to talk to you,” Madison blurted out. “Can I sit?”

“No,” Veronica replied. “I’ll find you later.”

Madison sat down anyway. “Later doesn’t work for me, I have to talk to you now.”

Veronica rolled her eyes but sensed the urgency in her voice. “What is it?”

Madison eyed Wallace, but before she could say anything Veronica said, “If you need to talk to me now, you’re gonna have to talk to him too.”

Madison took a deep breath. “I’m sorry.” Wallace cocked his eyebrow and Veronica tilted her head, both in shock. Madison didn’t notice and kept talking, tears starting to form in her eyes, “I’m sorry I said all those nasty things about Lilly when we were friends, and I’m sorry I was a bitch to you instead of being there for you when she died. I’m sorry I started rumors about you, and called you a slut and wrote shit on your car. And I swear I knew nothing about the drugs in my drink that night.”

Madison was all-out crying now, “I don’t expect you to forgive me, I just want you to know that I’m sorry. About everything.”

Madison jumped up and started to run away, but Veronica stopped her. “Madison, wait.”

Madison turned around, and faced Veronica. “I forgive you.” Madison smiled meekly and walked away.

“I’ve never known you to be the type to forgive,” Wallace commented.

Veronica gazed in the distance, “I can’t explain it, but I think Lilly wanted me to forgive her.”

Wallace squeezed her hand and continued his impression of Dave Chappelle.

Madison finished adjusting her make-up in the bathroom mirror and turned around to find herself face to face with Lilly. “I feel better now,” Madison said.

“Congrats, and consider your punishment lifted,” Lilly said, gesturing at Madison’s crotch.

“Wait!” Madison thought about it for a second. “Can you let me keep them for say, 15 more minutes?”

“Umm, okay,” Lilly answered, as she disappeared into thin air.

Madison took out her cell phone and texted Dick, “Meet me in 10 minutes. You know where. <3”
