The Soundtrack for Episode 3x01 of our virtual Season 3!
Just a quick note: There are no spoilers for Season 3 in this. It's all completely made up.
3x01: Where Does The Good Go?
3x01: Life’s Waiting to Begin (Scene 1)
Open on Veronica, messenger bag in tow, walking up to a building at Hearst. Long and wide stairwell leads up to the building and Veronica stares hesitantly at the entrance.
She wonders if Hearst will really be a new start or just a déjà vu of the hell that was Neptune High. Wallace walks up behind her and tells her that the building won't go up in flames if she steps foot inside. Veronica laughs and quickly collects herself as Wallace makes his way inside. Running off pure resolve she follows him inside determined to make a fresh start at Hearst.
Song:
The Adventure by Angels and Airwaves Why:
The lyrics encourage making a fresh start and not letting things that have happened in the past interfere with what your future can be. It’s an upbeat and hopeful and fits well with a scene like this.
3x01: It’s On Your Mind (Scene 2)
Wally and Veronica slip into the classroom taking two seats in the back of the crowded room. Moments after a hard-ass, stuffy professor enters, slams his briefcase down on the desk and promptly begins a roll call. His voice sputters out the name ‘Cindy Mackenzie' causing a heavy silence throughout the room. There is no answer. Veronica looks at Wallace and then out of a window to her left. Cue flashback.
Veronica and Mac F/B:
V/O: You’d think I’d able to handle any kind of pain right now but I can’t. Mac hasn’t spoken to me in weeks and I can’t handle it but I guess somehow we will both push through this.
Close up on Mac lying on bed, eyes puffy and swollen. Tear tracks can be seen on her pale skin. Veronica tries talking to Mac but all Mac does is turn over on her side and away from Veronica. Veronica leaves after waiting a few minutes, disappointed.
Song:
Heaven Forbid by The Fray Why:
Lyrically this song fits the scene because it depicts Mac’s hopelessness after what she gone through since Cassidy’s death. It also describes Veronica’s wanting to show her a way out but not knowing how to do that without being overwhelmed. The dark melody of the song also fits well with the scene.
3x01: Spinning Around and Around (Scene 3)
Veronica and Wallace enter the quad sitting down at a red metal table. The camera lands on smug Logan Echolls coming up behind Veronica. He lets a vulgar comment fly from his lips causing Wallace to shake his head and Veronica to roll her eyes. She then fires back a rebuttal. Logan opens his mouth to continue when Wallace says, “Just shut up and kiss already.” Wallace sees his mistake as the kiss deepens, he regrets what he says, begging them to stop, causing Logan and Veronica to break apart and laugh.
Song:
Ready and Waiting To Fall by Mae Why:
This song was chosen because of the lyrics match so closely with Logan and Veronica’s relationship. Logan and Veronica’s whirlwind of a relationship that seems to take flight whenever they are on screen. The lyrics show both of them are ready for the out-of-control romance they have entered.
3x01: Silence Broken (Scene 4)
Veronica/Logan Airport F/B:
Glancing at her cell phone again, Veronica drops into the hard, uncomfortable, plastic chair. When she gazes up again, she focuses on Logan, standing in front of her. She questioningly says his name and he gives her a sad smile. "Your dad isn't coming. Something about a case and time." He says simply. And for what seems like the 100th time in days Veronica finds herself wrapped up in Logan's strong but gentle embrace. She presses her face into his chest, eyes squeezed tightly shut. Breathing deeply, Veronica pulls away, trying to hide the hurt. Logan grabs her bag and they walk toward the exit.
Song:
The Ocean by Mae Why:
The song tells that Logan will always be there for Veronica, no matter the situation. It tells that they are each other crying shoulders. They help each other with everything, not matter what it is. It shows the strong bond they share and that they need each other to get through the rough times.
3x01: (Scene 5)
The door to the Mars’ apartment slams close as Veronica enters. The camera settles on Keith cooking at the stove. When he hears Veronica plop down at the kitchen counter, he turns and smiles at her. He asks her how her day was and she discreetly makes a joke rather than actually tell of her day. He places his famous chili surprise in front of her, causing her to smile quickly. The two continue eating and babbling about their days.
Song:
Overdue by Jonah Cohen Why:
This song gave the air a care-free feeling which is perfect for a daddy-daughter scene. The songs show the close relationship between the two and much they are alike.
3x01: (Scene 6)
V/O: When dad said he didn’t know if he could ever trust me again, I didn’t know that the door was going to be able to swing both ways.
Veronica storms into the apartment after saying goodbye to Logan. She finds Keith making dinner for them. He turns toward her when she enters but he doesn’t say anything. He just places a dish of food on the counter for her. Veronica makes a strained joke but Keith gives no reaction. She angrily asks him what was so important, but he refuses to tell her. She grabs her food and walks to her room, glances back at the kitchen before slamming the door. In the kitchen, we see Keith cringe at the sound.
Song:
Rough Around the Edges by Teitur Why:
The song was used because it told of the rough patch Keith and Veronica had hit. The trust became a big issue and this song relays that feeling.
3x01: Pimp Juice (Scene 7)
Sitting at their now usual table, Wallace and Veronica begin their best friend banter, discussing their first few days at Hearst. The quad is filled with music from a lone boom box that one of the students had brought. Wallace casually brings up the frat party set for tonight. Veronica shakes her head as if to say no-freaking-way. Wallace pleads with her telling her that she is going even if he and her boyfriend have to drag her there. Finally, Veronica consents. She and Wallace then head across the quad toward their next class.
Song:
Pimp Juice by Nelly Why:
The song was used as a fun throwback to Wallace and his scenes in early S1 of the show.“Your life still a non-stop Nelly video?” and “Pocket protector and still full of pimp juice".
3x01: Look Good (Scene 8)
Veronica and Wallace enter the frat house. Music is pounding and pulsing through the entire house. The camera pans to show a tightly packed room with food and alcohol everywhere. Wallace smiles heading over to a girl in the corner. Veronica presses through the dancing and rowdy crowd trying to find a small spot but every inch of the place seems to be covered with people. Leaning against the wall, she surveys the room.
Song:
I Bet You Look Good (On the Dance Floor) by Arctic Monkeys Why:
This song is a great party song. The beat and the lyrics match perfectly with the scene playing out.
3x01: He’s A Chick Magnet (Scene 9)
Fashionably late, as usual, Logan walks into the frat house. As he does, he is surrounded by two slightly skanky girls. The camera swivels back to Veronica, now several feet from the wall and half way across the room to where Logan is standing. The camera swivels back to Logan who seems to be trying to evade Skank One and Skank Two by saying he wants a beer. Veronica, almost to Logan and his sluts, is grabbed by the arm. She whirls to find herself face to face with Troy.
Song:
Chick Magnet by MXPX Why:
We just thought this song was fun and perfectly described the fangirl behavior of the girls who hang around Logan and how he can’t help but attract people. The lyrics are funny when you consider all the glares Veronica is sending his way before she goes after him.
3x01: Coming On To Her (Scene 10)
Troy, then, motions to the wall and Veronica follows. They begin making small talk. Troy smiles and places his hand lightly on Veronica’s forearm. Veronica smiles uncomfortably before gazing around the room. The camera comes up on Logan’s face, his dark eyes watching every move Troy and Veronica make. He makes the same trek across the room that Veronica made moments earlier. When he comes up beside Troy and Veronica, he shifts his weight so that he is directly next to Veronica. Troy drops his hand. The two exchange pleasantries before continuing to stare at one another. The camera then focus on Veronica, her face twisted into an amused smile. Her hand finds Logan’s and gives it a squeeze. She then pulls Logan from his rooted spot and away from the crowd.
Song:
Next Contestant by Nickelback Why:
The song fits personally with Logan’s personality and the protection on Veronica. Logan’s jealous side comes out perfectly through the song. We are able to see his strong feelings for Veronica and his weakness for her.
3x01: I’ve Never Know A Love So True (Scene 11)
The lock slides on the bathroom door before Veronica whirls around to face Logan. Her face is half amused, half angry. Logan is leaning up against the bathroom counter, arms folded across his chest, staring at her intently. She lends back against the door and matches his stare but she is unable to whip that smile off her face. Logan starts rambling about Troy and his arms but Veronica interrupts bringing up Skank One and Skank Two. They find themselves only inches away from one another. Logan grabs her fisted hand and pulls her closer. Then he kisses her. Veronica throws her arms around his neck while he spins around so that she is now once again sitting on a bathroom counter. They break apart and smile and before continuing again.
Song:
Red Meets Blue by Matt Wertz Why:
This song was chosen because it tells us that Logan and Veronica are ready to forgive each other and work things out in their relationship this time. The song tells of their strong love for each other.
3x01: (Scene 12)
Veronica makes the same trek across the crowded quad as she did on her first day. She stops in front of the enormous building in front of her, as if to survey it. She smiles to herself, throws her coffee cup in the garbage and confidently enters the building without any thoughts of terror.
Song:
Wake Me Up by Ross Copperman Why:
The song is a happy-go-lucky song that was used because we wanted to show a contrast of Veronica nervous and then Veronica with confidence. The song tells that she has moved past her negative thoughts and is confident that this year will be different. It’s optimistic and upbeat and that fits very well with Veronica’s mood as she walks into the school.
3x01: There’s Something I’ve Missed (Scene 13)
Veronica, finding a seat, glances around the room. She notices Stacy Wells walking toward her. Stacy’s expression is twisted in pain and anger. She slides into the seat next to Veronica. Veronica starts to ask her if she is alright when Stacy turns toward her and whispers, “Veronica, it happened again, there was another rape last night”. The talking in the classroom fades as the camera goes off Veronica’s shocked expression.
Song:
Somewhere a Clock Is Ticking by Snow Patrol Why:
Veronica’s happy-go-lucky mood is broken when she heard of the rape. The song brings her back into the reality that not everything is perfect. It was a good song to end the scene with.
3x01: (Scene 14)
Veronica sinks down into the driver’s seat, composing herself before starting the engine. When she arrives at the beach house, she sits in the seat, head against the wheel until someone taps on the window. She looks up to find Logan’s concerned face staring at her. She opens the car door and slips her arms around him, he pulls her closer. She tells him about the rape, and he pulls her tighter to him. “I’m going to figure this out, this bastard is going down.” She says to him, softly but strongly. The camera turns toward Logan who is still holding her tightly around the waist. The camera goes off his shocked but accepting expression.
Song:
Where Does The Good Go? By Tegan and Sara Why:
This song was chosen because it had the perfect end for Veronica’s confession to Logan. It was also a great song to end the episode with.
We hope you enjoy it! Definitely leave us feedback and let us know how you liked it. :)
