Vicki, I never get enough of how you focus the lens of your writing to flesh out every detail, every facet of their lives. Your Ennis is so exactly the man that Annie Proulx created that it's almost scary. And I love the idea that he's wondering if Jack knows how much he's needed. In the case of these two rough-and-tumble individuals, I have an idea that 'need' is another word for 'love' - only slightly more intense.

Thanks for the great comments, Cyn. I'm glad you picked up on the 'need' part. Ennis has told Jack he loved him, but it was hard, and I don't think he'll be saying it too often. He'll be finding other ways to get his feelings across, but Jack doesn't have any doubts anymore, so it will be so much easier *WHEN* I manage to get them back together. He's busy right now, but he's making a few friends that will be very beneficial down the line, starting in the next chapter.

No cookies yet - but it's on my list. Have had one of those RL weeks, but am ready to write the last scene of the next chapter of "Fire", so might just get around to baking after that. And thanks so much for the recipe, cause it does look yummy.
Also meant to tell you that you've done a heck of a job of keeping Jack a vital part of the story even though he's not physically present. It's like Ennis carries him around in his heart - a lovely thought.
Yay! This story is so good. I love Ennis's progress. He is developing as a person and it is so believeable. I hope Ennis gets word from Jack again soon. All these aftershocks and things are cause for concern.
Sorry this part was so late, and thanks for sticking with me. And don't worry, Ennis will be hearing from Jack next part. Lots of things for concern up north, but not too bad for the guys. Rest assured, Jack did not get hurt and won't be, either. He's just very busy right now, trying to help out as best he can. :-)
Vicky, you, IMHO, have hands down created one of the most plausible, subtle and realistic view of Ennis growth in all of BBM fandom. And that you did it all with Jack "off stage" is truly remarkable. You have created that OS Ennis after Jack dies, showing what he has learned about love but have done it within the framework not of Jack's death but in the framework of Ennis knowing that Jack easily could die. Part of OS Ennis viewpoint was that he was keeping both of them safe by not being together but you have put Ennis the position of knowing that it is by virtue of Jack being away from him which is putting Jack at risk. Because he is in this frame of mind he is freed from the trap and with the help of Rich, Thelma and Elmer he is able to think outside the box.
Watching your Ennis grow as a person and as a man has been wonderful.
You are far too kind, but I really appreciate that my concept seems at least plausible. Just as Ennis' pre-Brokeback experiences shaped him, I like to think that maybe his post-Brokeback experiences did, too. In the OS, Ennis never got the chance to really battle his demons. Too many things were against him, and Jack. I tried to come up with a situation that would force him to not only doubt his father's lessons, but to fear being away from Jack more than he feared being with him. He's getting there, but he still isn't faced with having to deal with having Jack around on a daily basis, for any real length of time. Sometimes it feels like I'm beating Ennis up even more trying to undo all that damage...the cure being only slightly better than the disease. LOL Ennis still has a ways to go, and I hope you continue to enjoy his trip. :-)
I love how Thelma pointed out that Ennis has broken the circle of hate that his father tried to instill in his sons. Obviously it worked with KE - and it almost ruined Ennis's life. I'm worried for Rich though. But if eh dies I guess Ennis can just sell the motel and move up to Alaska to be with Jack!
Don't worry about Rich. He's a tough old bird. *grin* And yes, Ennis has broken the circle of hate, but his greatest accomplishment is that he has not backed down to his fears. Of course, Thelma can't know how things would have turned out if Jack had not stopped Ennis' wedding. And I promise I'll get the guys together, soon. :-)
