Chapter 1

The next few weeks of Sungmin’s life, Sungmin knew that he was never going to turn back anymore. Everyday Hyukjae would call him and he would be at said destination on time, ready to beat up more people. He had nothing else to do anyway, his life was practically meaningless. His taekwondo did help him at times though, and he would be the one battling to his death while Hyukjae stood to the side and enjoyed the view. But he didn’t complain. He actually enjoyed it sometimes, enjoying his countless victories over others who challenged him.

A sunny morning, after a short “10:30, at Pepper’s shop, ambush” he left the house, ignoring the shouts from his mother and stopping to give his worried brother a few reassuring excuses before taking off. As soon as he stepped in the cigarette shop, someone tackled him from the side.

“Oof!” Sungmin groaned, his breath completely knocked away from the collision. He body slammed on the wall, white sparks appearing in his eyes until he realized that the attacker was hugging his waist, body crouched and shouting loudly about someone’s arrival and where the hell that “fruit-selling kid” was.

“The hell, Hyukjae,” he managed to gasp, struggling free from the other’s grasp. He slowly stood up again, wincing at the pain that was stinging his back. The redhead looked up and jumped away from him, scratching the back of his head.

Hyukjae laughed sheepishly, “Ah, sorry, I didn’t know it was you.”

Sungmin raised an eyebrow. “Since when did you start saying sorry?”

Hyukjae straightened his shirt and coughed. “Since when did you start coming late?”

“Was trying to get my brother to stop butting his head in my business,” Sungmin explained coolly, walking towards the counter. “Hey, what’s up Pepper.”

“Hey,” the heavily accessorized girl responded, smiling at Sungmin through her thick cover of makeup. “Long time no see, yeah?”

Sungmin grunted in response while Hyukjae walked over to her and kissed her hand. “How’re you and your um-“ He made a disgusted face, “Little monkey getting along?”

There was no response. “Don’t think I even have to ask that,” He muttered while his friend started nuzzling the girl’s neck.

“You’re jealous.” Cam Hyukjae’s muffled voice. “Go get some girl. I’m sure chicks dig your style.”

Sungmin was about to answer when he heard the approaching footsteps from the street outside.

“Quickly! Hide!” He hissed, diving behind the counter and pulling Hyukjae with him. They crouched silently as their target, a group of eight tough-looking teenagers entered the shop. Some started flirting repulsively with Pepper, and Sungmin saw Hyukjae grit his teeth in anger. He looked down and realized he was still grasping the other’s arm and he quickly released his hold.

The tallest member of the group, probably the leader, smirked and stood right in front of the counter.

“You won’t mind if I take a few right?” He chortled and leaned forward, propping himself up with one arm on the counter and reaching for the cabinet full of cigarette packs. Enjoying the frightened expression on Pepper’s face, he moved slowly towards her, his followers snickering behind him.

Sungmin widened his eyes. “Shit,” he thought, “if he continues we’ll be---!” Apparently Hyukjae was thinking the same when he suddenly leapt forward and landed a fist on the leader’s face. Sungmin followed, jumping over the counter and aiming a kick at someone’s stomach. The teenager doubled over in pain as another swung a punch at Sungmin’s face, which he avoided with a duck and struck the attacker’s neck with a knife hand. The guy immediately collapsed, falling on a pile of boxes that fell on top of him. Chaos ensued. Tables were knocked down, boxes were overturned, and sometimes a sudden breaking of glass. Nobody noticed a shrieking Pepper who ran out of the store.

“Whew! Y’all see that? THAT’S for daring to steal a few bucks from my pay!” Hyukjae shouted, laughing at the mess of whimpering bodies on the ground. Sungmin just stood to the side, staring blankly while his friend rambled on. He noticed that there were only seven people and at the same time caught a glimpse of movement from the side. As fast as he could, Sungmin swiftly pushed Hyukjae out of the way before a table leg smashed on his shoulder. Yelling in pain, he stumbled but Hyukjae caught him by his shoulders and stared into Sungmin’s eyes. Sungmin received his message and nodded, knowing what to do next.

The incoming assailant, wielding his table leg, charged towards them, aiming for another blow at Sungmin’s back. At this time, Sungmin lifted his feet off the ground, putting all his weight on Hyukjae’s shoulders, while Hyukjae gripped his waist and held him up. Sungmin then sent two flying kicks at the last person’s chest, who flew across the room and hit his head on the wall.

“Yeah!” Hyukjae cheered, but his face turned to shock as he lost his balance, falling backward with Sungmin’s weight still on him. Sungmin yelped in surprise and tumbled to the ground. He heard Hyukjae groan.

“Thank god I have Hyukjae under me,” He thought, laughing silently in his mind. He opened his eyes to see Hyukjae’s face threateningly close to his. The other had his eyes closed but eyebrows furrowed and his lips…… Sungmin gulped. Wait, where were his lips? It took him another second to realize that his own lips were rather warm. Hyukjae suddenly opened his eyes and turned his head away, staring awkwardly to the side. Sungmin coughed and clambered back up, Hyukjae doing the same. They stared at each other speechlessly for a moment until they heard a gagging sound below them. Despite their injuries, the group of teenagers watched them amusingly, some faking retching sounds and others with a horrified expression on their faces.

Sungmin felt his cheeks burn and he and Hyukjae roared intimidatingly at the same time, making all of them scramble to their feet and limp out of the store as fast as they could.
