100 Super Junior Fic Challenge Soft patters sounded above Kyuhyun’s head as he walked through the park, an umbrella in his hand, keeping him dry. His sneakers splashing the puddles of water on the pavement, he was cold and he felt miserable. He had no idea what made him come to the place he dreaded the most. It seemed as if his legs were pulling him forward, step by step, his chest feeling painfully tighter by the second.
Thunder rumbled softly ahead and the sky darkened, heavy clouds obscuring the bright sun. Kyuhyun squinted and tried looking through the thick pour of rain. Everything was fuzzy and appeared colorless, and Kyuhyun watched as a dog ran across the field of grass, trying desperately to find shelter.
He kept on walking, the rainfall growing louder and heavier. His hands stung in the bitter cold and he gripped the handle of the umbrella harder. His mind was swimming with different thoughts and with all the indistinct feelings he had.
Kyuhyun’s eyes sensed a tint of color among all the grey he was seeing. His footsteps quickened and the smudge of colors moved closer and became clearer. Then he stopped.
Two boys, giggling and chatting, were crouched beside the park bench with a bucket of paint. One of them, wearing a hoodie, coated the smooth wooden surfaces with a bright sky blue, while the other, one with dark hair, spun his head around frequently and glanced around with mischievous eyes. Kyuhyun’s lips curled up slightly. He could hear their uncontrollable tittering and hissed urges of “hurry up!” from the distance.
Then they disappeared. What was left was the park bench, the rain splashing on its surface and droplets dripping onto the ground, but still bright blue. Kyuhyun walked slowly over to its side, his fingers tracing dark patterns embedded in the wood. Then he looked up to see the same two boys standing in front of the bench. They seemed to have grown taller and older, wearing different styles of clothing. The dark haired boy was saying something softly to the other, his eyes apologetic, and holding a necklace out in his hand. The boy in front of him, taller and without the hoodie, was clearly trying to keep his face straight, but failing when his tears glistened in his eyes.
Kyuhyun widened his eyes as a wave of realization washed over him. He happened to know the next words that would come out of the dark haired boy’s mouth. “I’m sorry. My heart has gone for someone else,” a familiar voice sounded in his head, while the boy’s mouth spoke along with it. “I don’t deserve your love.”
The words struck at Kyuhyun’s heart as he tried to shake the voice out of his head. His umbrella fell to the ground. Rain soaked through his clothes, but he didn’t care. He watched silently as the taller boy stood there, trying to force out a smile.
A hand reached over and took the necklace from the other, clenching it tightly in a fist. The shorter boy smiled, the smile that Kyuhyun had fell in love with, and wrapped his arms around the one in front of him, breathing out a “thank you” before letting go. Kyuhyun watched the taller boy gaze after the other with pain etched on his face. The boy stumbled and fell on the bench heavily, breathing hard before letting out a choked sob. He never stopped after that. Tears ran down the boy’s cheeks as he cried, pounding the blue bench with his fists. His wails echoed in Kyuhyun’s mind as he stood there, his eyes moist, not sure if his face was wet by the rain or by his tears. Blood ran down the boy’s wrist, and Kyuhyun looked down at his right hand. The scar was still there, an imprint of the necklace he had clutched too hard so many years ago.
The boy whimpered one last word before disappearing again before Kyuhyun’s eyes.
“Jongwoon.”
