One day, in 1996 a little girl was riding her bike outside Dallas, Texas.
Some evil soul abducted and murdered this little girl. Her name was Amber Hagerman. Because of the courageous efforts of Amber's relatives and local politicians we now have this awesome system called the "Amber Alert".
Whenever someone goes missing, especially a child , they send out notices over our Emergency Broadcast systems on Radio and TV networks. They even flash the alerts on Freeway/road signs! So when someone goes missing, the community is alerted and can aid in finding, and perhaps even saving someone. The greatest thing about AMBER alerts is they work. The more they use the system, the more they find people that otherwise would not be found. Sometimes children have been returned safely to their terrified families after being abducted or getting lost, and other times, like today, all that is found is remains. Like that of a pregnant woman named Linda Underwood, and her 7 year old son who dissapeared last night and were murdered by her boyfriend, found in a shallow grave today near Ft. Worth.
In this especially disguisting scenario , the boyfriend suffocated Linda, when her son Jaden walked in, witnessed his mother being murdered and suffered the same fate. So the Amber alerts can't always save people , but they often bring comfort to wondering relatives. Not to mention most often finding the criminals who abduct , murder , kidnap people. For too long we ignored the problem of people going missing, becoming complacent because of the overwhelming number of cases and lack of communication with the public, who are the most helpful resource in cases like those. If you don't know about Amber Alerts, I'd encourage you to check out
