Yes, I'm most certainly aware I haven't posted in over a month, but get use to it bitches, 'twas busier than an Englishmen preparing for a masquerade ball in the autumn seasons! What does that mean, I have no clue, just made it up as I went along, so SILENCE! lulz
Anyways, I went onto the unofficial website of Gorillaz, being an avid aficionado of the group, as well as helping to put an end to the stirring of curiosity as to why there hasn't been a whole lot of news coming from their world as of late that has been brewing in my tea-kettled head. The reason simply is because, unfortunately, there will be no more material from our animated foursome of cynical pseudo-intelligent geniuses judging from the more recent article explaining the new project known as "Carousel" (More on that later).
Typically, we as 'Rillaz fans are being fed the same enigmic vocabulary from the duo which is Hewlett and Albarn as to there being "another Gorillaz-ish project on the horizon" or "expanding our musical aspects" ordeals. But this time, it's official boys and girls, they're moving onto bigger, and most hopefully better things. Granted, throughout the journey of the debut album, to the Demon Days Live performance in the Manchester Film Festival, I've gained a respect to these two wonderful artists (one of the musical, and one of the visual), and I personally believe that whatever it is they wish to do next seems to be the best opportunity to show the world that art isn't dead, and can be used in other perspectives.
Anyway, onto what this article is about. "Carousel" is apparently the new code-named project that Mr. Hewlett & Albarn have been working on since the ongoing production of The Chinese opera Monkey: Journey to the West. I directly will quote from Mr. Hewlett's explanation on the current Observer magazine interview.
"What Hewlett hopes to achieve in the near future is a new project which Damon and I are working on now, called Carousel, which is even bigger and more difficult than Monkey, and it isn't going to fit anywhere and no one's going to like it, ha ha ha! We've started work - I've done a lot of visuals and Damon's done a lot of music but we haven't figured out how they're going to fit together. 'I can't say much about it yet but it's sort of like a film, but not with one narrative story. There's many stories, told around a bigger story, set to music, and done in live action, animation, all different styles... originally it was a film but now we think it's a film and it's a stage thing as well and ... look, it's basically us doing what the fuck we want without worrying about whether it's for a record company or a film company or whatever. So I'm not sure how it'll pan out, or even if it will happen. But Damon's written around 70 songs for it, and I've got great plans for the visuals, but right now, at this moment, it's still just a really good idea."
What happens next is the response about the forthcoming studio album of the Monkey soundtrack, as well as the future of the afromentioned band...
"Gorillaz now to us is not like four animated characters any more - it's more like an organisation of people doing new projects. The new Monkey album will be 'from the people behind Gorillaz', in the same way that the Who 'produced' Tommy in all its various forms - on record, on stage, on film. That's my ideal model - Gorillaz is a group of people who gave you this, and now want to give you new stuff. We did two pop albums, and that's great, but I don't think I'd want to do another one.'"
So there ya have it. Based on this, it truly seems Gorillaz will never make a return much like Russel Hobbs said himself on the We Are The Dury Interview CD "how well we do six or seven albums down the line right after Demon Days". Albeit, that was an exaggeration from the original two creators stating that they'd at least do one last album afterwards, Though it goes to show that time can change a man/woman's personal thoughts and goals. Too bad. I was hoping they'd give one last hurrah, but hey, I hope that Carousel will become just as memorable. Here's to you guys!
