Sunday mid-day: Dorm computer labs

Jul 22, 2007 20:10

After this morning's encounter with Rikku, Karal had taken himself for a long walk around the preserve. Now, settled again, he was braving the dorm computer labs.

A brief fight with the scanner, staring suspiciously as it hummed and flashed, and Karal's letter was inside the computer. Working slowly and carefully, he attached it to an email, and sent it to Molly.

Dear Molly -

To begin with, John says hello. He found me in your room Friday night, as did Will - and she thought I had broken in! - it was quite embarrassing.

On a serious note, and I hope you are not unhappy with me, but John now knows about the after effects of your powers. I did not set out to tell him, but we were discussing the dinosaurs and their aftermath and it came about. I would not have said anything, except that he is your friend, and the more people who know, the more protected you will be.

The island seems to have completely recovered from the invasion, and no one suffered any serious injuries. There is a resilience here, an adaptability, like none I've ever seen before.

On the whole, it has been quiet since you left, with very little strangeness. I now have a pet chinchilla, a small rabbit-like creature which Gabriel has named Esther. Each student in the workshop on caring for animals was assigned a pet to care for, and she was mine. Esther does not like Altra, and is not afraid to make this quite plain. Altra's reactions are entertaining, as I am sure you can imagine. Aravis was given a rat, and between it and her new puppy, our room is becoming something of a menagerie.

There was a circus of sorts here on Friday, which was interesting, if a bit overwhelming. Truly, though, I feel like I have done nothing beyond study, ride Trenor, and meditate for the past week. Workshops have been very undemanding, which I believe is in keeping with it being summer, and I have only two. Here, at Fandom, is the only time in my life I have ever had nothing that I must do, and it is a very odd feeling.

I do miss you, but I trust you are enjoying your time in Los Angeles, and that you are learning many things -- and staying safe, as you promised. Please give my greetings to your friends, and my good wishes. Do you know yet when I might pay you a visit? Be warned, though, Altra insists on joining me.

Yours,

Karal
