Thank you BBC for putting up The Magician's Apprentice on YouTube! Our local cable company, that we have stuck to thru thick and thin, dropped BBC America last year :(
But #1 son and I could catch the (first half of) the season premiere of Who anyway :)
Thoughts (possibly spoilery):
Always nice to see the Sisterhood of Karn again.Googled them and was struck by how many times they've shown up!
Liking Missy better this time around. Clara is so disturbingly black and white, good and evil. I liked Missy poking her preconceptions. ALIEN dammit, they are ALIEN. And old, really, really old. I think being very very old must warp your perception of other people. They are all children, to be protected or condescended to or patronized or coddled.
I mis-spelled perception as preception which is so interesting that it's distracting me. Back to the pocket review.
The alien bar was cool. Why do I hear the Mos Eisley song in the background when I think of that scene?
Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes? Spent that part with my hand in front of my eyes.
I was laughing so hard even before the Doctor made his 'axe fight' comment that my son thought I'd lost my mind. He totally didn't get it.
"That will be funny in a few hundred years."
Aliens and planets and spaceships, oh my.
Daleks. Why did it have to be Daleks?
Skaro was cool.Really well done.
I hope part two brings the girls back around to at least verbally thrust and parry. I was starting to think of them as the traditional angel and devil on the Doctor's shoulders. But I want them more as Madonna/Whore dichotomies. Female characters are characters, you know. With agency and all that.
Don't know if I'll continue to poke the Internet to give me more Doctor or not. I know I swore off Who last year, but #1 actually sat down to watch with me, and that's rare. He's growing up and away...
Other shows of note. Finished S1 of Teen Wolf, starting S2. Guilty pleasure much? #1 son wanders by, stops to watch, then says it's a chick show and leaves the room saying Nope, Nope, Nope. (He likes chick shows.) The Great British Baking Show is back with much fun. I long to try a trifle. Who knew petit fours could be either cake or cookie based? And different shapes? My provincialism is showing. I started Arthur and George but haven't gotten very far. Doc Martin keeps intruding on Doc Arthur.
I read Robin Hobb's next to latest, Fool's Assassin, while in WV. That's right, I started at the what, 10th or 11th book in a series? It was v. good and I got the first three books in an e-bundle from the library. Enjoying them right well. The sequel to FA is on hold at the library, so 10 (or 11) then 1-2-3, then 11 (or 12). Why not? Mark of a good series if you can read them with fore-knowledge and still enjoy. See: Vorkosigan.
Speaking of which we are trying to get #2 to watch Star Wars. I ready a thing on the Internet that recommended watching them in this order: 4,5,2,3,6. Leaving out 1. We got through 4 and 5. I've never actually seen 2 and 3. Interesting idea to insert 2 and 3 as a flashback of sorts.
I am signing up for things. Babylon 5 Love in February (a month with personal significance), also signed up to be an election judge in April, chaperone for field trip in November, Drama Club meeting (for #2) in December. I realized I'd put life on hold because Unemployed. And Job Search. But life does go on and while I don't know where I'll be when, I never really did know that for sure. Stephen Franklin's words keep coming back to me (reminder: watch Shadow Dancing again soon). "(I'm) alive. Everything else is negotiable."
Nota bene: When you google for a B5 quote and your own fanfiction comes up in the search results, that's quite an amazing feeling.
The company I'm consulting for is finishing their re-structuring and one of TPTB has asked for my resume, references, etc. This may be 'shall we stop, shall we continue, shall we progress' dance. Who the hell knows. In any case, I'm taking my head cold back to bed, to lie down and read more Hobb.
The whole family has this bug and they are all at school or work. *intense guilt* But that last sneeze it felt like my ribs were breaking, so off I go to rest and hydrate.
