My little Acer netbook seems to be dying. R is going to pull on his white hat, and try to yank the hard drive and copy it today. Last night I cajoled it in to booting up on AC so I could pull off the few WIPs I had going. They are safely ensconced on a key. Most of the other stuff is duplicated on the big boy although there are a few things I would miss...I used it a lot for downloads when my HP was re-born as a Linux system after the Big Virus Attack, and I hadn't figured out how to do a lot of things. (Amazon's MP3 downloader, for instance, doesn't work for my flavor of Linux). So there's some unique content there.
The main problem is that the little guy is my writing computer. *whine* And this isn't a good time for purchases. I don't have much faith in computer repair. If R can't figure it out, it's in all likelihood way too expensive to fix. Possibly a repair would cost more than a new one.
In more positive computer news, I finally got Thunderbird working on the big (Linux) guy. All my mail is there, but only one account kept the older mail in folders. The other is all unfiled. The newer mail was never put in folders since gmail seems to prefer labels/tags. My main service changed to a gmail app end of last year, around the time of the Big Virus Attack. In any case, I prefer folders. So I have, oh, about 2000 e-mails to go through and pitch or save and file. That's one account. The other only has 600 or so. Yay?
I have a derelict e-mail account on my phone. They set me up with a gmail account when I bought the phone, a-a-n-d-----I forgot to write down the password. It was one of my standards, I know that, but none of them seem to work. It didn't have much traffic and I've forwarded all the vital mail to other accounts. But the phone is locked onto that account. It's the one I would use to set up a pay system for the Android market for instance. Verizon says it can do 'Nothing, nothing! It's Google's problem.' Google wants tons of information before it will unlock it and let me set a new password. Literally tons of stupid stuff, like all the G-apps I've used the account for, and exact dates. Which is NONE except Gmail. Also, (and this was a fun one), the last password I remember. It only ever had one, and I'VE FORGOTTEN IT. Which is sort of the point. Apparently this is just tough noogies, and I'm invited to just get a new account already and leave them alone. An account which won't be locked to MY PHONE. Verizon might be able to do something in person but my guess is it would involve taking everything off and then putting it back on. The hacks I've seen online all involve blanking the phone, which I am loth to do. *grumble*
FWIW, Google recently instituted a password protection policy, where you can give a phone number or secondary e-mail to prove you're you, and let you reset passwords. Bully for them.
And it's off to work I go. Without my baby, who has to stay home and have its guts ripped out. Woe.
