There are more of you who know what I mean: unusually severe Arctic cold is tormenting Europe. Here we usually have a very cold period in January. This year it was delayed and also added some bonuses - deep freezing combined with strong wind. Definitely bad. Deep frost you can bear when you are wrapped in warm layers. No way in this situation.
But I am all right at home and warm, only Rocky is outside. Of course he is in the garage overnight but he wouldn´t stay longer, he is an outside dog and as soon it is some light, he starts to bark and wants to go out. And for his walk. Yesterday we went in minus 15°C, I wore a scarf over my mouth and nose. Rocky runs happily, chases birds and sniffs for mice (probably frozen in their holes). This morning was only minus 12 but the wind got stronger and even the scarf was not enough. Ollie is sitting inside on a window sill, watching the crowds of birds coming to one of our three feeders. I keep the feeders full the whole day, poor birdies must eat well to survive!
But after many many years, I saw a big redbreast robin inside the feeder!!! He has a thick, strong beak like a hawfinch and he ate the seeds with relish. Simply wonderful! There are also some small robins with orange breast here but these won´t go up the window sill to the feeder, they look for food only on the ground.
And...we are in the middle of BIB work of insulating the cellar ceiling in 5 "rooms". Unfortunately the timing is also bad with this extremely cold weather. Poor guy who works here - but he is a real professional! He has been here for a week (minus the weekend) and will be possibly to the next Monday (also minus the weekend). Today he will hone the garage ceiling...OMG...he has prepared me for the mess, a very soft white dust...he brought a special overall and will wear also a respirator. Also he warned me not to use water, only after good sweeping, because the dust is actually plaster and you know what it does when you put water on it...
No pictures so far, I will take some to show you but I don´ t want to dance there in that mess with a camera:-).
For all of you who suffer from that colossal cold - stay warm, stay safe!!!!
