This is mostly for those who are interested in history/architecture and, I believe, this will also attract
quarryquest !!!
There is a monastery church in České Budějovice, it dates back to a foundation of the town by King Přemysl Otakar II in 1265 in Gothic style. Unfortunately it was rebuilt partly in the Baroque Roman Catholic style, which was...not very fortunate.
Anyway: it is open for tourists and because was there almost 40 years ago, I entered. It is a very plain architecture, the tall and slim Gothic lines are interrupted my the later Baroque parts and those twisted fat (not chubby) Puti . I watched the vaulting and its ending - there are consoles in a shape of various heads and floral motiffs - and suddenly I stopped, totally excited: I was looking at a Green Man!!! A genuine Green Man - no mistake, I know them from
quarryquest ´s entries and from "History Today" magazine!
How is it? And no one knows the common ground of this figure with English history? I took some pictures fast, it was my lunch break.
Unfortunately most of the pictures are dark...But you will see the fresko on the walls too!
Green Man with all the attributes in Bohemia - in a small south - Bohemian town. 13th century!
A contemporary chandelier fits beautifully there! View from below
There was a twin of the first one near the altar
The frescos - you may recognise the scene of crying over Christ
