"Forgot" to eat?

I frequently here people around me say "I forgot to eat." I wonder, how does this happen? How does a person forget to eat? Do you just not recognize that growling emptiness that is your stomach? Are you unaware of your dwindling energy level and increasing irritability? If I were to "forget" to eat, surely the feeling faint would be a clue that ( Read more... )

It also occurs to me that some people have more "padding" than you do and and so don't necessarily experience hunger as a true need for sustenance. The average sedentary person takes in more calories than they burn off and getting totally involved in something can easily over-ride hunger messages because the body doesn't really need calories at that point. Personally, I often stop working and have a snack when all I really need at the time is to take a little break from working.

I've had to work to train myself not to eat when I'm not hungry. Partially this involves unlearning the lesson my mother worked so hard to teach me which was that I wouldn't make it through the day if I didn't eat breakfast. It turns out that I often feel much better if I don't eat when I first get up. Sometimes this means I get involved in something that takes up my time and attention and I arrive at a lunch date/meeting totally starving, which feels kind of good if it doesn't go too far. Other times I get light-headed if I haven't eaten and if I don't get an immediate protein fix I get all shaky. Go figure. It takes all kinds...
