Hello, 2009! It's Maya!

Out with the snow, and in with the new! I must admit that I did very much enjoy returning from the ATL to a White Christmas in Seattle.

Like many of you, I am very glad to be rid of 2008. Here's to 2009 sucking less *cheers*

Here's my share = My Fitness Coach for the Wii
Looking to get fit with the Wii?  Forget the Wii Fit and pick up "My Fitness Coach" for about $20-30. Just came out a few weeks ago. Amazon says it's temporarily out of stock online, but you can probably find it at Best Buy, Target, or GameStop.  Maya, your personal virtual trainer, creates workout routines for you based on your area of focus (cardio, upper body, lower body, core, flexibility, weight loss), amount of time (15 min - 75 min), and intensity level.  If you set a long term goal, she'll combine that with your selection of the other four areas. You also chose music and workout "location".  Each workout has a warmup, some cardio, variety of exercises depending on your focus, and a cooldown.  She will periodicially ask you how you are doing and depending on how you answer she will adjust the difficulty of the routine in future sessions.  She also gives you tips for increasing or decreasing the intensity of the exercise (for example, adding a hop, arm movements, or lowering your stance). There's also yoga.  Workouts can incorporate equipment you have like hand weights, step bench, heart monitor, or a balance ball.  It's basically an interactive DVD workout with customization, exercise variety, and goal setting/tracking.

The only cons I can really think of that it doesn't use the Wii balance board.  But really.... that's not saying much since all that could really do is weigh you or judge your balance/posture.  Also, probably wouldn't replace the gym for straight toning up.  The graphics on the Wii aren't as good as the game Yourself! Fitness on the XBox but it does seem like they've worked out some of the bugs of the former game and improved some things like transitions between the music tracks.

I was a huge fan of Maya in Yourself! Fitness so when My Fitness Coach came out for the Wii I was super excited.  I have several DVD workouts but some of them I feel like I have to be in shape just to be able to work out to them. I lack the strength or endurance to survive more than 7-10 min, and it gets very discouraging (sorry, Jillian). For me, I have the long-term goal of weight loss.  I can fit in 15 min of Cardio in the morning before work (better than a triple grande skinny caramel latte) or I'll do 30 min of upper body, lower body, or core in the evening or on the weekend.  I haven't yet tried to do a workout longer than 30 min but I think I could do an upper body, lower body, core, or flexibility for longer because there's built in "rest" periods for stretching and water breaks.  Whereas, the cardio will totally kick my ass 'til I drop (which right now doesn't take much). I have a step bench, hand weights, and recently acquired a balance ball which gives more variety to the exercises.

Anyway - that's my pick for combining fitness with the Wii.  If anyone picks it up or has checked it out from prior XBox game, let me know how ya like it.
