When I have nothing to say my lips are sealed; Say something once why say it again
~Psycho Killer, Talking Heads

Anna sat slumped over her mother's kitchen table with an icepack to her head and a cup of tea cradled in the other hand. She had a killer hangover and she really was in no mood to put up with any form of annoyance after the other night.

She'd ended up in Queens around 2 AM courtesy of Riley, a bar owner who was a friend of Adriana's, so drunk she'd passed out in his car on the drive from Manhattan to Queens. Normally Riley would've cut her off halfway but she'd obviously been crying when she came into the bar and he was busy fighting off the vultures hovering around Anna hungrily, feeding off her sudden vulnerability. Riley hadn't gotten any explanation beyond the phrase "relationship-challenged" and chalked it up to a fight with her boyfriend. That was usually why women cried and came into bars late on a Sunday night. Anna was too tough to cry over nothing, and that's how Riley knew this was more serious than a lover's spat over the television channel. She had the same look on her face as the day Matteo kicked her out of their apartment. Riley hated that look. Which was why he saw to it personally that Anna made it home - especially with Phelps on the loose - safe and sound.

"Lights." She grunted when Adriana flicked the kitchen lights on, wrapping a blanket around her daughter's shoulders.

"Sorry, Isabella." Adriana had a soft presence about her, maternal instincts and love exuding in vast amounts from her smile to her voice. "Riley said you would not tell him what is wrong. Please tell your mama?"

Eyes opening slowly, Anna turned her head just slightly to glare at her mother - a gesture that made Adriana frown.

"Anna... Isabella... mia cara..."

"Don't." She said in a sharp, clipped tone.

Eva emerged from the living room, Adriana's bible in hand, reading a verse aloud for her Christian Theology course - trying to get a handle on a suitable paper topic. "Love is patient, love is kind." She chewed on her lower lip and glanced at Anna, suspecting that there was a fight with Don and that Anna was being her usual prideful, cynical, stubborn self. She knew Anna didn't want to hear this, but Eva also knew that it would make her sister stop and really think about things. "It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails."

Scowling, Anna shot up from her chair, knocking over her tea in the process. "Enough!" She screamed at Eva, grabbing her coat and bag off the kitchen floor as she stormed out of her mother's apartment - ignoring the throbbing pain from the sudden combination of light, noise, and motion while she took a taxi to her apartment. Her cats could wait another day.

She wanted to be left alone by Eva. Left alone by her mother. Left alone by Maria.

Anna wanted to hurt in peace.
