on_thecouch Prompt 20.2 - Carpe Diem

Oct 18, 2008 01:19

"Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary." John Keating Dead Poets Society

"Really, Alison, I believe if you look more closely at the patterns of the behavior you'll see my reasoning."

Pushing some blonde hair off her shoulders, Alison shook her head and shoved a beer off on Anna. As usual, the bar was crowded with the masses of intoxicated hockey fans to watch the Rangers face off against their opponent of the night. "Morasca, you think too much. We're off the clock - no DB's, no bosses on our backs, and no reports to file. Time to just watch the game and relax."

Anna took a swig of her beer and let out a sigh, shoulders slumping as she began arranging the bar peanuts in front of her into a representation of the Rangers' defensive play from the last few minutes as she interpreted it. "Sorry doc."

"Ah ah ah. Off the clock." Alison scolded gently, rubbing Anna's back. "Talk to me, sport."

"I snapped at Flack the other day. Asked if we were speaking again or if he was still avoiding me. Except in not very kind terms." She rotated the bottle between her hands as she watched the condensation slowly drip to the bottom.

Chuckling, the blonde doctor shook her head. "That's it? You have every right to wanna bite the man's head off. Hell, you've put up with and been a lot nicer to him than probably 95% of other women would've. Don't get your panties in a bundle over it. He's a big boy, he'll live. And hey, he's been an ass since he broke it off."

"Don's not an asshole." She protested firmly as she pushed her peanuts into a napkin and folded it up.

"He's moved on. You need to move on too. Carpe diem, Anna. You've been in a rut ever since the break-up and it's starting to affect you at work. You're distracted and you've been snapping at Cassady more every day. Even Sid's starting to ask questions. Life is short - I think you know better than most how fragile it is - so live it up. I'm not sayin' you should party hard or go crazy, but don't let yourself go to pieces."

Anna kept her eyes on her beer until she took a long swig, remaining silent. Alison took this as her cue that it was getting to her. They'd known each other since Anna's days as a uniform and it wasn't until the last year that they'd become friends. Alison was often an older, wiser sister to Anna, gently nudging her when she needed nudging. And sometimes - she dished out the tough love.

"Hey. Get off your ass and get over him. What the hell happened to the Detective Morasca who took nothing from men and kicked the ass of anyone who tried to hurt her? Huh?" With a flick of her wrist, Alison promptly smacked her friend upside the head.

"Owch! Alison!" Anna winced and rubbed the back of her head. "What the hell?"

"That's for being stubborn. You're young, gorgeous, you have a loving family, nice apartment, successful career... you're an amazing person. Don't give up just because it didn't work out like you wanted it to. You'll find someone. Until then? Appreciate the blessings you already have and keep hitting up singles bars with yours truly." She winked and knocked back her beer, nearly spewing it when the Rangers scored a goal. Alison leapt from her seat with a loud whoop and Anna just laughed, shaking her head.

Carpe diem indeed, Alison.
