Ok, so I have been looking all over to find things to do lately, cause going to titty bars is depressing and going out drinking alone anywhere else is probably even worse. There's really nowhere to dance unless you are willing to see some really lame band like 'Rump Posse'*shudder* on any other night of the week than Wednesday for the most part, so you have to hunt for the good shows. It just so happens there are 2 very different shows that should be very cool going on tonight if you happen to live in ATL like I do...
The one I am most excited about, I have to say is
Angels of Light at the Earl. Now this is not my favorite venue at all, so why am I willing to fight my way through dozens of coked up wannabe punks wearing $300 outfits, trendy yuppy bastards who heard the place was cool, and rockabilly greaser lookalikes to see a show at my local pub that I don't even like? The answer is
Michael Gira. Plain and simple, it should be illegal to kick as much ass as this guy does. Now maybe you've heard of SWANS, or even better, really listened to them, but the album White Light From the Mouth of Infinity is the only reason I still own a cassette player and I would sell my own children for a CD of it. It's the most stark, self-effacing thing I have ever heard. Raw truth just pours out of the speakers and fills me up. In a word, it's powerful. The review of their latest album on
tinymixtapes.com (thank you Shaliza) seems undecided. Obviously you have to be into that type of music, but I also kind of get the sense that, like a lot of people, the reviewer isn't really that aware of Gira's full catalogue. "[A]vant-garde fringe punk" was only a small part of his work with SWANS. Either way, if you dig acoustic music and singers with a real deep voice and a story to tell, go see this. I will be there.
The other show going on tonight is some friends from Athens, who put on a great show.
Boulevard puts on a great show for little money and if you dig a good pop sound, these guys are the deal. Lead singer, Benji Barton really commands attention from the stage and knows how to get the crowd going. This is their first show at the Drunken Unicorn (MJQ), so they are the opening act (10p), but for $5 it is well worth it. Headlining tonight is
The Swear whom I have yet to witness perform, but according to many put on a great show too. I suspect whoever is following up Boulevard has their work cut out for them.
Well, these are my picks for the week. Two great shows opposite sides of town, totally different experiences. As much as I love the guys in Boulevard, my $12 are going to see Angels of Light tonight. To hear him live, and hopefully get an opportunity to ask Gira himself to rerelease White Light on CD is too good an opportunity to pass up. To think I bought this tape for $1. It's almost like fate.
