Madama Butterfly

I’ve just got back from seeing the opera “Madama Butterfly” at the local theatre with my mom. To my shame, I’ve never really heard any of the music before... but it was absolutely *brilliant*!

It was terrifically well acted and sung by a touring Russian company, and the orchestra was amazing (although there was only one double-bass player, when ( Read more... )

Yeah, I just find it easier to talk about classical. If I mention my other faves most people go: "REALLY?! o.O When pushed for time I tend to say "I like everything except sunshine music and the Beatles," and then I get lynched by every other Beatles fan in the area. Love and peace, guys!

The List:

I like a lot of rock music, especially Muse, Within Temptation, Nightwish and Evanescence.

I like pop music, including Savage Garden, Kate Bush, Christina Aguilera, Madness and Bare Naked Ladies.

I like blues, including Blues Brothers, Blues Traveller and Tata Vega (Celie's Blues)

I like country, including Dolly Parton

I like R&B, especially Brandy, Black Eyed Peas

I like rap, including Will Smith, Eminem, Gorillaz

I like Christian music, including TobyMac, Barlow Girl, ZOEgirl and Matt Redman

I absolutely adore soundtracks, especially Trevor Jones, Phillip Glass, Joe Hisaishi (Studio Ghibli eg. Spirited Away) and Pan's Labyrinth

I also love musicals, especially Wicked (because Idina Menzal's voice is amazing) Les Miserables, Chicago, Rocky Horror and Little Shop of Horrors.

I'm rather eclectic, ya see. I'm sure everyone likes lots of different kinds of music- I just can't choose which one to like best!

Et vous?

I am also eclectic.

I like Canadian rock (The Tragically Hip, Sam Roberts, The Arcade Fire, The Stars), other rock (Janis Joplin, Cake, U2, some grunge, newer bands like The Fratellis), singer songwriters (Ben Harper, Sarah McLachlan, Regina Spektor, Rufus Wainwright), Hip Hop (Lauryn Hill, Lupe Fiasco, Jill Scott), jazz (Holly Cole, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Louie Armstrong, Doris Day), folk (flamenco, Cape Breton fiddle music), electronica/trip hop (Royksopp, Portishead), tv score music like in Firefly and Battlestar Galactica.

Dance music in general is awesome. I also get really attached to specific singers' voices, like Rufus, Lauryn Hill, Regina Spektor, Harry Collier from Kubb, and Bono when he was younger. Musicals? I like Steven Sondheim best, probably. I'm with you on the Beatles-- I like some songs, but I don't really get the Beatles love.

I was reading your posts about mixing and recording, and it's incredibly interesting. I think we're all music geeks here, but I don't know anything about the tech side-- if you want to post more in the future, it's really fun to read about it. --Imo

I completely forgot! I have a real thing for people singing in French for some reason. It can be complete cheese or straight up, whatever... I don't know why, but I love it. Spanish is nice too, but I don't actually understand it, I just like how it sounds. Do you like music in other languages too? --Imo

I like music in Japanese and Italian, not too keen on French for some reason...

I like trying to learn things phonetically, too :)

And I'll keep posting the tech stuff if people keep asking questions- I love talking about it. Can we have a thread in the Swoop about music? Like, what music fits which character, place, situation, etc? I'd find it really interesting :)

Yes, Japanese is quite nice to hear sung too.

Phonetics. Ack. The weirdest part for me is that spoken language does not = sung language for art music, so that people are laziest singing in their native language and most 'proper' in the learned ones-- but if you tried to speak that language the way that you learned to sing it, people would think you're crazy. Singing's a whole different world than instrumental music.

I think Lyredenfers has got a music post planned for the Swoop when she gets the spare time, so you could talk to her. I forget the specifics, but if her idea is different you should do that one yourself-- it sounds like a lot of fun. I know I'd like it. Two music post are better than one! --Imo
