Vividcon 2005 Anime Panel Post-mortem

Aug 27, 2005 03:07

Doing this panel was a pretty daunting task due to the sheer immensity of the topic. See, this panel had to be part lecture, part discussion and part craft panel. With only 45 minutes of which to fit this all in to, it's a pretty tall order.

Then there was the problem of what topics to discuss. So, before vividcon I posted a poll asking people to ( Read more... )

Again, fantastic panel. Made me wish there was at least another hour of time available. Who knows, maybe next year? ;] I'd love to see you lead a panel on effects--the idea you mentioned not getting to sounds like it could be a panel all on its own.

I was asked about Meta in the AMV community and whether there were a lot of discussions about form. To which I replied that there were practically none. While there have been many discussions on how you do technique X or effect Y there have been stunningly few discussions of narrative, cutting styles, POV or any of the other topics that frequent the live action vidding meta discussions.

Aside from myself, and Jasper-Isis over at AMVwiki.org, there are fairly few people who are actually willing to devote the time to thinking and writing about theory and related meta-stuff. Some rather prominent editors (Beo comes to mind) would probably consider it pretentious, and louldy denounce it. Most editors would rather take their intuitive grasp of theory and go edit rather than discuss it.

Another issue is a simpler one: we seem to lack the vocabulary. We know what we mean, but comminucating it can be difficult.

Another possibility: demographic.

I have no numbers to back up anything I'll write, so I won't write anything more. It should be fairly clear where I'm going with that one word, though.

Again, a wonderful panel, and I'm really impressed with your ability to cover as much as you did, organizedly (<-- not a word), in the time you had available. (Showing the clips was a great tactic -- I still remember the laughter and cries of "I get it now!" from the live-action vidders.)

Certainly there are some very effects-heavy live-action vids, and that community has talked about issues of appropriateness and inappropriateness; I'd be interested in a panel next year discussing the different ways the communities use them . . . um, what you said. :g:

there are a huge amount of character driven Inu Yasha videos

I'd be glad to get pointers to a couple good ones -- I know nothing about Inu Yasha, but my 13-y-o stepdaughter likes it and she and her friends are writing proto-fanfic, and it would be cool to show her some.

It was great to meet you!

Wow, that sounds like a terrific panel.

Walken in Mordor made me crack up, and hurray, masking tutorial! Thanks very much indeed, I still have only the vaguest idea how to do this.

:downloads like whoa:
