Arrival: Jet Lag, Rhinovirus, and Soap

Oct 27, 2012 13:30

I did indeed arrive as planned, only to get hit with ... jet lag! There are some things we just don't believe in until we've had them -- I've always thought jet lag was something that, you know, whiners got.  Ha ha on me; I slept at weird times, couldn't eat, and couldn't make any kind of sense out of anything!  I met C.'s co-workers while in this state; I can only apologize the next time I see them.

That was over after a week; but by then I had picked up un rhume; a Parisienne cold.  I still have it, but I can finally think again!

Eventually we got the internet hooked up correctly, but I still can't find all the notes I took for LJ entries.  It's probably just as well; I can only imagine how incoherent they must be!

C. had already found us an apartment.  It's very lovely; its about 55 square meters, or just under 600 square feet.  It's very well laid out; the only problem I have is that there is NO STORAGE.  Some kitchen and bathroom cabinets, but no closets of any kind!  But it's sunny and open, so it will do for a while.

C. also arranged many small things for my comfort; a coffee maker (essential!), towels, a really lovely bed, a pot of blooming violas, even a gluten-free baguette.  One of the nicest things, though, was the soap.  I wanted a shower; C. warned me that the yellow liquid soap was scented and I wouldn't like it.  On a whim, I sniffed it anyway -- and it's Pears Soap!  Maybe that doesn't mean anything to you, but to me it's the scent of exotic luxury.  So I felt I was really in Paris.

Today we are going to explore what may be a dog park.  The berserkers would like that; they only get to go on walks on the leash and have not been able to run since we got here.

My overwhelming impression of Paris at this point is ... escalators.  Whenever you deal with the metro or the trains, you are probably going to ride at least one escalator.  The metro station closest to my house has one section that looks exactly like an M.C. Escher extravaganza....

paris!
