nicknames

For whatever reason, my students love nicknames. LOVE nicknames. This has been true for every class I've had so far in my career. They nickname their family members, their friends, the teachers, and anyone else. Sometimes they're basic nicknames, like La Rubia (the blonde) for the only blonde teacher at our school. Sometimes they're teasing, like Gordo (basically Fatso, but for some reason it doesn't tend to insult the recipient). And sometimes it's a whole different kettle of fish.

My 8th graders that have been here since they started middle school last year are currently on their 3rd assistant principal. The one they had at the end of last year came in rather suddenly. She had wicked looking long, red nails and a temper to match. She was determined to do everything her way (which was nothing like the the way they'd done things all year) and they were going to get it right the first time or else. Not understanding English was not an excuse. The kids immediately nicknamed her La Diabla Roja, the Red Devil.

Obviously La Diabla did not last, and this year they have a new AP. She's much younger, softer, and more maternal. It's also worth noting that her last name brings to mind images of money and that she dresses very well. The kids have named her La Joya, or The Jewel, and they are absolutely in LOVE with her. Even my feral class immediately straightens up when I threaten to ask her to sit in. I really hope she sticks around, cuz it's absolutely the cutest thing I've ever seen!
