This was the first day the entire staff had to be present, and it was really good to see everyone again. It was a bit distressing to see so many new faces, and to discover that there are still 3 positions open, even though the school year has now officially started. I'm also a little worried by the lack of a cost-of-living raise this year. Money is getting tight.
But good things are happening. We've changed around the way ESOL works this year, and hopefully this year I won't have to teach well-educated honor students in the same class as children who haven't seen a teacher since 4th grade. In addition to the wasted hours of meetings that are a part of every first week of school, we also started moving books out to our trailers from the book room on the 3rd floor today. I'm not planning to go out to the barn tonight, but I feel like I've ridden for hours for all that my muscles ache. Yay getting a good workout on the job! We have a student teacher this semester though, and the poor girl wore nice clothes and HEELS today. Pretty sure her feet were bleeding by the end of the day, but God love her, she never complained.
Department Head has a new trailer this year, and they were building steps and a "curtain" around the base while we were working today. The workers kept stopping to chat with us, and at one point, completely out of the blue, one asked me if I was from Pennsylvania. I kinda blinked for a second, then replied, "No...I...live in Virginia". His face immediately lit up, and he said, "Oh, you must be from out in Luray!" I am not from Luray, nor am I from Pennsylvania. I have not ever lived in either of these places. As far as I know, my accent is local. I have lived within 2 hours of the school my entire life. I really can not begin to imagine what was going on in this guy's head, but I sure wish I could.
