Further Investigations
Part I

“Scorpius?”
“Mmph.”
“Hsss, Scorpius? You awake?”
“How can I sleep with you hissing in my ear?” Scorpius sleepily cracked an eye open to see Albus huddled on the floor next to his bed.
“Oh… well, I can’t sleep. James is snoring again.”
“And this is news you had to share?” Scorpius scooted back into the bed to make room for his friend and lifted the covers invitingly. “Come on, climb in.”
Albus quickly slid in, cuddling into the warm spot Scorpius had vacated. The boys snuggled in, tugging and shoving at the bedclothes and pillows until they were each comfortably nestled in a cocoon of warmth. Albus yawned hugely then stuck his tongue out at his friend’s disgusted look.
“I really didn’t need to see that Potter.” Scorpius replied haughtily.
Albus expression fell and he sighed. “Yeah, well… I didn’t need to see that earlier either.”
“I told you not to look.” Scorpius smirked.
“And you’re never going to forget it, are you?”
“Nope.”
“Sneaky prat.”
“Gormless git.”
“…”
“Albus…”
“They looked really happy tonight, didn’t they?” Albus asked wistfully.
“Yeah.” Scorpius sighed. “I haven’t seen Father laugh like that since Mother left.”
“Dad too. He’s happy when we come to visit, but he seems so sad when we have to go home again.” Albus flopped onto his back with a huff. “Divorce is so stupid! Why can’t we just live together like we used to? It’s not like they were fighting and screaming all the time.”
Scorpius remained quiet, remembering the muffled fights he knew he wasn’t supposed to have heard, and the thick tension between his parents before his mother left. Things really were better now, even if he did miss his mother terribly.
“Scorpius?”
“Hmm?”
“Do you think this means Dad’s not coming home again?”
“…”
“I mean, if he and your Dad…” Albus sighed again. “Maybe he really doesn’t love Mum anymore. But I thought if he loved us enough... maybe he would.”
“Baka. Of course he loves you.”
“Ba… what?!” Albus looked over in surprise.
“Ba-ka. It means ‘idiot’ in Japanese.” Scorpius smirked.
“Since when do you know Japanese?” Albus challenged.
“Since last year. Father has a business partner in Tokyo and they came to visit us. His son Ichiro is James’ age and we’ve been owling for a while now. I’m helping him practice his English and he’s teaching me Japanese. He’s a second-year in senjutsugakkou on Hokkaido now.”
Scorpius peeked at Albus’ dumbfounded expression. Perfect. “That's wizarding school to you.” He explained kindly.
“You… baka.” Albus grinned and punched him lightly under the covers.
Scorpius’ eyes lit at the challenge.
