Do contestants [on American Idol] really deserve to be mocked?

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ent/tv/5492761.html

I absolutely 100% completely and totally agree with this article. This is why I can't stand Idol. I have never watched a single episode. I have never watched a single minute. I fast forward through any Idol commercials (even when I'm ignoring other commercials and letting them play through). I think it's offensive and stupid. And I think those who mock the contestants are sadder and more pathetic than the contestants themselves.

We always tell people to go for their dreams. To give it a shot. You regret more the things you didn't try than the things you did. You'll never know until you try it. Reach for the stars. Some of the greatest men and women in this country started from humble backgrounds or struggled against the odds to make their dreams a reality. The only true failure is never trying.

What have 99% of the auditioners on Idol done to deserve such derision and mockery? I'm sure there are the occasional arrogant assholes. I'm not saying none of them are mock-worthy. But honestly, aren't most of them just average men and women who, despite very long odds, took a chance and tried to do something exciting. For that matter, what have those who mock them done to feel they're in any way better? Ok great, so someone can't sing that well. And, oh my god, they thought they could. Where's the firing squad? You know what? At least they tried. What about you?

I really, really hate this country. It's one thing to bash drunken celebrity partiers. Fine. But then we bash fallen celebrities who are, quite posibbly, mentally ill. Which is pretty sick. We laugh as they lose custody of their fucking kids. Maybe the kids are better off, maybe they shouldn't have had kids in the first places, maybe maybe maybe. But they're human beings with human feelings and emotions. And it reaches a point where it stops being funny and starts being twisted and sadistic. We mock them because they have a stain in their underwear. What the hell is wrong with people? I just don't understand this "finding joy in the misery of those who have done nothing to us mentality." Yes yes. Schadenfreude against those who have somehow wronged us (or that we've perceived wronged us). That's one thing. But finding pleasure watching someone be riduculed merely because they took a shot at fulfilling their dreams? How does that wrong us? Because they went for it, while we were so lazy that we just sat there eating chips and pissing our life away? Damn them! How dare they make us feel bad about ourselves by living their lives far more fully than we do...the nerve. Bleh. I'm going to fiddle while Rome burns, and I won't shed a tear.
